BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Many in the public have been left appalled at the frequent fights among high school students, particularly at Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) where even teachers are being attacked by the out-of-control students.

ESHS was even forced to activate its remote learning plan on May 3, 2024, following a series of fights during the week, including one in which a male teacher was brutally attacked.

“That is ridiculous. The first question I asked myself is, who the heck raising these children? That’s the first thing that came to mind,” prominent local businessman C. Michael Thomas reacted when the matter was brought up on Talking Points on ZBVI 780 AM on Monday, May 6, 2024.

Host Damien C. Grange said when he was going to school, fighting a teacher was like committing suicide.

Co-host Elvin G. Grant recalled the thrashing he would have gotten if he dared to misbehave. “You would get three sets of blows. You get beat on your way home and when you got home and then you get beat again.”

Parents putting their children on a pedestal

Mr Thomas said he wouldn’t have wanted to go home if his parents found out he had displayed unacceptable behavour.

The Managing Director of Clarence Thomas Ltd (CTL) said he believes parents have a lot to blame for the students’ lack of discipline.

“I think what we have done, but I can’t say for sure...because we have parents who taking their kids and setting them on these pedestals. Like nobody can’t say anything to them, nobody can’t tell them anything.”

We need a plan- C. Michael Thomas

Mr Thomas said as a child he had to get manners and respect and had to say good morning and good afternoon to everyone he met on the road.

“And let me go to school and do something wrong. Ms Irma Smith, former Principal, was my cousin. She dragged me in her office and sit me down and said, not because you are my family, she say I going to make sure you are not going astray.”

Mr Thomas also said there should be no debate about the importance of education in the territory and the emphasis that needs to be placed on it. He also said there needs to be a plan for the next 10 to 15 years “on where this country is going to be and what role its people is going to play in here. There is none.”

We all fought back in our school days so don't make it seem like something new. To add to that our siblings were our biggest rivals at times. The best we can do is take up mentorship and reason with the youths rather than casting blame especially when the system dictates how to discipline our kids, which has taken the power away from the parent.

We all? Primary School-High school-College I have never fought. The only fights I had were play fights with my siblings for food or general fun. Please speak for yourself.

You can’t compare one with the other, we did fought back them, but as to brutally attack a teacher , NO WAY JOSE , stop trying to justify the unjustifiable, people like you so, are part of the problem, teach you child some discipline..

Speak for yourself. I have never had a fight in all my school years. Look at the way some of these children carry themselves with NO PRIDE. Sometimes you try and tell them to fix their clothes etc and the cut eye they give you or the words they release at you is appalling. We didn't even have the guts to curse swear words at a teacher much less as to hit them. My children know I don't play and if they make the mistake to disrespect ANY ADULT in school, I would be there in seconds so stop trying to justify the actions of some students.

Parents need to be parents and stop trying to be their children's friends. Stop sparing the rod and spoiling the child.

Teacher brutally attacked but you missed the part where the teacher attacked a child first and was forced to stop when his sibling stepped in. Ridiculous on every level but yet said teacher still teaching. How about the other teacher that is only teaching 20mins before class is over and have attitude with each child and insulting them. Stop aya sh** and tell the whole damn story.

young men fighting when there is no outlet for excessive testosterone is a norm. What's not normal is the reason for the fighting and them wanting to kill each other. Even with the best parenting in the world young men will still feel the urge to fight and release pent up negative energy. They must be taught where to direct this form of energy....go to the gym, do physical labor, get into boxing, wrestling and things that allow them to exercise that power and dominion to exhaustion. After they do this, they can exercise their creative brain power because all that energy has been regulated. We as a society forgot what a rite of passage means for a man and what happens as he starts to develop and mature into manhood. 90% of the problems in society will be solved if fathers played active roles and the women chose better suited men to reproduce with.

It must go back to the home. Where are the fathers? I can bet you a lot of these homes have absent fathers. I used to pray that I never have to raise my sons by myself. It's very hard on single mothers. Especially when you have headstrong boys. Today my sons are adults and very respectful and respectable. The solution: We need mentors, big brothers, people who these young men look up to to go and give pep talks. Even people in the prison system who have turned their lives around or has been in prison and came out and living an upstanding life. In the meantime churches and community organisation's must also do their part to help.

There are students in the school worshiping Santa Muerte (Lady of Death) which is considered as a death cult popular in Latin America. Drug traffickers often pray to Santa Muerte for the safe passage of their cargo.

I sometimes wonder about this then I see the parents and all questions answered. It so dad to see the state of discipline among our youths today.

Growing up now totally different from back in the day. From the time we leave our houses, to returning home, someone was there to keep us in check. Anything you did wrong or bad behaviour, someone already call or send message home to your parents about it. I sometime wonder how this was done because phones weren't that popular and cell phones were unheard of. Of course, there were a few bad apples but for most part we knew what was expected of us, especially at school and church. I know any student who laid hand on a teacher was in for a royal cut @%$. Not only from your parents but extended family members and elders in the neighbour hood. The other day a group of us were talking about school days and some of the things that took place. One mentioned skipping school.
Back then if you skipped school and the police pick you up, they would wait till breaktime or just as lunch finishing up to bring you back to school. That person was the joke of the week. They will get teased for days and sometimes the whole term.

On another note, I laugh when Elvin talks about his punishment. I know many of us can recall such beatings. If mommy really mad at you, that extends to several days along with some cussing.

YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE STREET SMART , THE YOUTHS THESE DAYS ARE HOOKED ON
MIND ALTERING DRUGS THAT ARE CIRCULATING IN THE BVI , THERE ARE COCAINE * IMPORTED WEED THAT CONTAINS IT AND HEROINE * GUMMIES THAT CONTAIN OTHER INGREDIENTS THAT GIVE YOU AN EXTRA HIGH * PILLS THAT DOES THE SAME , THE YOUTHS DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE PUTTING IN THEIR BODY ,
SOME ARE SLIPPING IT IN THEIR FRIENDS FOOD * DRINKS AND THEIR SMOKE , SO SOME ISN'T EVEN AWARE OF IT , BUT THEY ACT WEIRD AND AGGRESSIVE / DO YOU THINK THOSE YOUTHS ON SCOOTERS , IS IN THEIR RIGHT FRAME OF MIND WHEN THEY ARE
PERFORMING THEIR DARING DEATH STUNTS ?, ON ONE WHEEL GOING BETWEEN TWO VEHICLES ETC ? ( THEY ARE EVEN DOING ( DRIVE- BYS ) ON SCOOTERS, THAT AIN'T NATURAL , SOME PARENTS ARE IN THE DARK , BECAUSE SOME OF THE YOUTHS ARE PULLING THE WOOL OVER THEIR PARENTS EYES , BY ACTING HOLY WHEN THEY ARE AT HOME , SOME PARENTS ARE HELPING UNINTENTIONALLY BY SUPPLYING THEIR KIDS WITH SCOOTERS TO DO THEIR THING , WHEN THEIR PARENTS ARE NOT AROUND , AND SOME ARE ENCOURAGING IT BY ENJOYING THE FRUITS OF THEIR KIDS ILLIGAL ACTIVITIES , LIKE KNOWING THAT THEIR CHILD ISN'T WORKING ANYWHERE BUT BRINGING HOME ALL KINDS OF THINGS , BUT INSTEAD OF ASKING QUESTIONS , THEY TAKE WHATEVER IT IS AND GIVE THEM A HUG AND THATS IT , AND I WILL LET YOU USE YOUR COMMON SENSE ON THE REST FOR YOURSELF ( IT CAN GET WORSE , SINCE WE ARE REFUSING TO ACKNOWLEDGE WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON IN FRONT OF OUR VERY EYES , ON A DAILY BASIS , SOME WOULD PREFER TO PUT THEIR LIFE ON THE LINE YO DEFEND THEIR
KIDS , UNTIL KARMA STEP IN

Public education should be a privilege not a right. Get back to suspending troublemakers and expelling repeat offenders. If your children can't behave in public school, then you should be the one to fork the bill for their education in private school. All this unruly behaviour is holding other kids back, thus holding society back and we already pay taxes. We shouldn't have to pay for bad parenting as well. End the "school is daycare" mentality. Discipline is the responsibility of the parents, not the school. We need more active parents.

Agreed, suspend the troublemakers for a period of time. The majority should not have to suffer for a handful of bad apples.

looks like Mickey running come 2027. We all have to realize that the BVI have changed especially those of us over the age of 60 years

What happen these days: when some children wake up to attend school mother is already on her first job

When some children comes home from school mother is on her second job

Parental guidance & the village raising children is a thing of the pass

these days the main focus is tourism and entertainment: not much focus is towards the development of our people

    Look at our roads
    Light Bills
    The dump @ pockwood pond
    Street water
    Sewage systems

The few above have been unattended Governments after government : Many Many years Now

We had a few minutes of rain fall some days ago and the place flooded out and the issue could the drainage systems and we speaking about the main areas where most of the people use on a daily basis(put back the traffic how it use to be)

Our children at the High School was in panic mode because the place full of rushing rain water and I guarantee you that situation might happen again

there's an old saying - "You make your children, you don't make their minds". You try your best with them to raise them right but some are demons in disguise hell-bent on bringing disgrace upon decent parents. so don't jump to criticise. sometimes what they do and how they behave at home might be completely different from what they do in public too.

All this nonsense about spiked & adulterated weed wouldn't be happening if there was a legal medical industry with safe guards & consequences for putting shit in people's medicine. If police & government were serious they would test it and release the results publicly that people whoever it may be know what they are getting involved with & not end up addicted to something they never choose to take!
