Scabies outbreak at Her Majesty's Prison?
Information is that some 3 to 4 inmates had to be placed in quarantine away from other prisoners and staff. Our newsroom sources who are familiar with the matter confirmed that the Environmental Health Division paid a visit to the government own facility and is investigating the origin and cause of the outbreak. Some believe it could have been from mosquitoes.
Garde tight-lipped as usual
Mr Verne A. G. Garde, the new St. Lucian Superintendent of Prisons did not immediately respond to our newsroom inquiry, however, a senior source at the Ministry of Education and Culture confirmed that the incident happened late October 2018 but stated, “It was an isolated incident and everything is back to normal,” and the prisoners are already out of quarantine. They declined to comment further.
Scabies is an itchy, highly contagious skin disease caused by an infestation from the itch mite Sarcoptes Scabiei. Direct skin-to-skin contact is the mode of transmission followed by a severe and relentless itch as the predominant symptom of scabies.
