ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Due to the presence of a large plume of Saharan Dust, the air quality in the Virgin Islands is at moderate levels but could reach unhealthy levels, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has advised.

According to DDM, these effects are expected to impact the territory until Thursday of this week.

“For this period, residents are being asked to exercise extreme caution as excess exposure to the dust can result in adverse health conditions,” DDM stated.

Risks, symptoms & precautions

At-risk persons include the elderly, children, people with underlying lung conditions, and people with chronic cardiopulmonary diseases.

Symptoms of exposure to the Saharan Dust include sore throat, itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, and dry cough.

DDM said precautionary actions could include keeping windows and doors closed, staying inside as much as possible, wearing masks to prevent inhalation of dust, keeping medication such as inhalers close, and seeking medical attention if symptoms are severe.

Its rained every night for the last 2 days and the humidity is near 100% during the day. Sure there is Sahara dust in the atmosphere over the central and western Atlantic BUT NOT IN THE BVI today, yesterday and tomorrow.

The DDM guys need to stop printing forecasts for large areas of the Atlantic Ocean that don't effect the BVI's tiny weather zone in this ocean.
