RVIPF Marine Shore Base to be renamed
This was disclosed in a Post-Cabinet Meeting statement published on March 21, 2024.
According to the statement, Cabinet “noted” in its meeting held on March 13, 2024, that the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force Marine Base will be renamed to the Virgin Islands Law Enforcement Marine Base.
The new building constructed by James Todman Construction Ltd is yet to be commissioned.
Purpose of marine base
The contract for the project, which included demolition of the existing building, with the exception of the cisterns, the construction of a new two-story reinforced concrete structure (5,656 sq. ft. gross), and auxiliary works such as sewer treatment system, boat rack platform, and civil works, was awarded to the tune of Two Million Three Hundred and Eighty Thousand, Five Hundred and Ninety Dollars and Eighty-Seven cents ($2,380,590.87) in January 2023.
The project was expected to conclude on February 6, 2024.
Minister for Communication and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5), back in January 2023, had said the police marine base serves to prevent illegal immigration, illegal narcotics smuggling, and illegal importation.
The police marine base project is being overseen by the Virgin Islands Recovery and Development Agency (RDA).
