RVIPF made 8 curfew arrests over the weekend - Governor Jaspert
The curfew is one of the Andrew A. Fahie-led administration’s ways of preventing community spread of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the Virgin Islands. The Territory has two confirmed cases of the virus.
The 24-hour curfew commenced on Friday, March 27, 2020 at 8:00pm and will end on Thursday, April 2, at 6:00am.
“These arrests are disappointing, but the curfew applies to all equally,” the Governor said during his address to the Territory on Sunday, March 29, 2020.
He added: “Police will continue to patrol our community to keep our greater population safe.”
Measures to protect all
Governor Jaspert sought to remind persons that the curfew is to protect the population from the virus which is now confirmed in two men who travelled from Europe and the US.
“Cabinet agreed these difficult measures to protect the overall population of the Territory, and I am pleased that the vast majority have complied. This virus does not discriminate, and this is our best chance to reduce the risk that the Coronavirus spreads widely within our Territory,” he pleaded.
He continued: “I know that not being able to go out and about, to join with others whether in prayer, or even just for a visit to the beach or the shops, has been difficult for all of us. But I believe it’s a sacrifice we all must make.”
Governor Jaspert said the restriction would be felt most during the week.
“As we approach Monday, and our regular working week, the impacts may seem even more unusual and restrictive, but as a reminder, unless you are classified as an essential worker as set out by our government you are still required to stay at home continuously. The law applies to everyone equally and will be enforced,” he pointed out.
Hours before making that speech, Bishop of the New Life Baptist Church John I. Cline was briefly arrested for breaching the curfew when he went to his church to deliver a sermon without a physical pass.
He said he received permission from Deputy Premier and Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Carvin Malone (AL).
Mr Cline was subsequently cautioned and released.
