ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Over 115 vehicles were stopped last Friday in an operation in the East End area led by the Road Policing Unit (formerly Traffic Unit) and assisted by Task Force, Beat and Patrol and both East End and West End Police Officers.

In the operation, 49 persons were ticketed for not wearing seatbelts while another 16 for using cellular phones while driving. Three persons were reported for heavy tints, another two for driving unlicensed vehicles and one for driving an uninsured vehicle.

Head of the Road Policing Unit Inspector Dariel Robinson noted that while it is sad that so many persons still do not abide by the traffic laws, these operations will continue throughout the Territory.

“The traffic laws particularly as it relates to seatbelts and cellular phone use are meant to reduce accidents and severity of injuries to occupants of vehicles and road users in general. It would be great if more drivers could support the laws’ intention and abide. Nonetheless, the Traffic Department will be enforcing the law and those who will not abide will be penalised,” he said.
