ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force hopes that cellular phone owners, managers of garages and yacht charter firms will come to view items available at the rescheduled Security Expo tomorrow (Tuesday, 23 July).

Heavy rains brought the Security Expo to an early close last Thursday, however even more businesses and security firms are expected to showcase security services and security devices at Tuesday’s Expo at the Noel Lloyd Action Movement Park.

After a relatively low crime season, three yacht burglaries were reported last week at marinas on Tortola while the occupants were asleep onboard. Electronic items and cash were taken. Similarly, two truck storage sites on Tortola were entered by thieves. Nine batteries were reported stolen from one site while eight from another.

At the Security Expo, the latest technology in burglar alarms, vehicle alarms, cameras, tracking devices for boats, dinghies, cameras, cellular phones, scooters, security locks, and equipment marking will be on display. Cellular services providers will also be on hand with handsets, GPS trackers and top-ups. RVIPF is also offering free raffle tickets for prizes during the day.

Recent reports indicate that cellular phones left anywhere unattended, for even a short period of time, will be stolen.

Four such thefts were reported in the last week. One owner lost her Blackberry Curve valued at $200 after leaving it on the counter of a supermarket as she paid for her groceries; another owner lost his Apple iPhone valued at $460 after he forgot it on a bench at a playground in Road Town. Another owner lost her Blackberry valued at $400 after it was forgotten on the counter at a laundromat. None of the cellular phones have so far been recovered.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Alwin James expressed his hope the Security Expo will bring a new perspective on personal property security especially as the Territory approaches the Festival season.

“A tracking device on an iPhone or an iPad can provide an owner the opportunity to trace and recover their items and deter other would-be thieves. Closed circuit cameras have also become useful in detecting and identifying perpetrators that enter your premises. We hope that persons will take advantage of this one-stop shopping opportunity at the Noel Lloyd on Tuesday,” he said.

The Security Expo will open at 11am until 3pm.

sometimes the stolen cell phones are used to call numbers that are stored in the cell phones' memory.
either numbers dialed by it's rightful owner or numbers that called their cell phone. someone recently
was useing someone elses cell phone information to call international numbers from jamaica. and making
obscure accusing comments to a location 6,000 miles away. it would be nice to also have security to keep
the 'security' people from eavesdropping on personal calls also. but that might upset some people...
