ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Persons in the Virgin Islands are being urged to get tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV, amidst concerning statistics showing an increase in cases in the territory over the last 5 years.

This comes as a recent media report quoted officials at the BVI Health Ministry saying there is an increase in persons across various demographics of the VI contracting HIV and STI’s with over 262 cases recorded in the last 5 years.

This has further prompted health officials to estimate that there are far more cases of HIV and STI’s in the VI community than what has so far been recorded.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) in a June 9, 2024, advisory said it takes note of the data and that its Family and Juvenile Unit wishes to endorse this concern, which it considers quite timely. “We would also wish to add that given the steady increase in these numbers, children and young adults, as a particularly vulnerable group, may be exposed to the associated risks,” the advisory added.

Criminal offence

The RVIPF has urged parents to augment their supervision of their children and where necessary, get them tested.

“It may constitute serious criminal offences if individuals are aware of their positive status, and still engage in unprotected sexual activity with partners without declaring their status.”

Described as ‘reckless and selfish’ behaviour, police added that such actions are covered under Section 325 of the Criminal Code, Revised Edition 2013, which stipulates a maximum prison sentence of up to fourteen (14) years.

“In keeping with the Ministry of Health's advisory, the RVIPF urges members of the public to get tested and act responsibly to avoid serious criminal liability,” the advisory added.

Start with the strip clubs ... Oh I forgot... They're illegal.

You will be surprised that some of these strip clubs and hoe houses have some of the cleanest women you can come across. They get tested regularly and would be more concern about ensuring protections are used properly when in the act. The women in the nice cars and the big jobs is the ones you have to worry about.

Alot of these Spanish that are working in these bars and strip clubs should be tested and should have a medical record or a clinic cards to show there check up and they should do a 6 month check up.

Even with a 6-month checkup, they can catch the germ in between checkups. They don't know which guy might have the disease, spreading it all around too.

THERE SHOULD BE A PUBLIC RECORD OF ALL WHO WERE TESTED POSITIVE FOR HIV! IT SHOULDN'T BE A SECRET THIS VIRUS HAS NO FACE.

Think before you type. What about innocent children who are born with it or the innocent boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse who got it from their partners? Do you think you are immune from it?

a lot of these older men are also targeting young females especially in high school (nothing new)

parents get you daughters tested and dress them appropriately from prying eyes. Encourage your daughters to practice good morals and self respect.

a lot of the females are following rap/dancehall culture which preaches sex , drugs and violence.

parents need do their part but tbh sometimes the apple don't fall from the tree sigh.

it is alarming that there's so many young females (in school or just completed highschool) are invested in festival, juve, carnival etc

and if you think its "culture" to have your 10-19 Year old daughter dressing half naked and throwing her self on random men then you are part of the problem..

@Sad I wish I could shake your hand. It is so disturbing to see how females are dressing these days. As a female, I feel so disgusted when I see women, young and old, walking the streets with their bellies out, buttocks out, breasts out! It is so DISGUSTING! And like you said, some of these mothers have their young teenage daughters who are in high school and even primary school flaunting their bodies for the world to see. It is not every style that comes out that you have to participate in! There are a lot of perverts out there and when they rape or try to rape you or your daughters you want to cry, but you must realize that men are visual beings, that is the way that God created them to be, and when the women leave nothing for the imagination what do you half-naked, unGodly females expect? When men see those breasts, legs, and thighs what do you think is the first they think of? Sex. And that's all they will want. Straighten up!

Thought in order to get a VI WP, medical tests were required and HIV/AIDS and STI tests formed part of that. If it isn't the Government needs to update their Health/Medical questionnaire. WP Renewals should also require a medical report whereby the same tests have to be untaken. For those who do not require WP, these tests should be mandatory and form part of your annual tests as part of NHI continued coverage. Lets not waste time debate this. We know a lot of us don't undergo any type of annual health tests, esp. the men. We only rush to the doctor after googling our symptoms and find out we might have this or that. Lets get proactive and take care of ourselves. Remember no glove no love, even if you are married. Some of us cheat ourselves and eachother out of having a loving, exclusive relationship. We leave our half to get empty outside! Know your status, get tested because the life you save will not only be your own but that of your unborn child or that of your loving spouse that God blessed you with. If your child is sexually active, its important for them to get the HPV Vaccine and encourage them to always wear a condom. Show them how to use them. Please don't leave their sex education to their peers. They are your responsibility. My advice is not to encourage any parent thats its alright for your teenage child to engage in sexual activity, but they do. Mind you, i waited until i was in my 20s. You might consider me a late bloomer. Just wished i waited until i was married but to each his own. Pease encourage
them to abstain but also teach them how to take care of themselves. Precaution is better than cure! Stay safe everyone. God bless the Nurses, doctors and all medical personnel and the people who call the Virgin Islands home!

So only people on work permit or the status quoted are carriers of the disease. What about the natives how do you omit them from being tested and their status be known also. Don't they have relations with others besides the natives. What an ignorant statement to make. That's how you keep promoting discord between foreigners and natives.

Please re-read what was stated in my comment again. You will see i spoke about making it mandatory as part of NHI which would include VIslanders and Belongers. I didn't realise you wouldn't understand. Sorry, oh if i stepped on your toes but then again reading is fundamental. Have a blessed day, màam!

yall teaching sex education in school? I think yall need to bring it back or emphasis it with the pictures of std

them std stuff use to scare me in school and thought me to protect myself

clearly a lot of young men and women aren't strapping up and protecting their sex life

a lot of young females (school kids) are also getting involved with street men/drugmen (young boyz as well) who have multiple partners they need to be careful.

Those STD pics scared the hell outta me also. Thats why i always asked any new partna i had for a copyvof their latest or last STD test so we could share the info with eachother. If they didn't have one or never had one then we would get tested together. If my partner or spouse refused, then there would need to be a very indept conversation because condoms can't keep you safe from crabs and that new scary disease, MPXV. My grandma always said you can see a man's face but can't see him heart. That also goes for a woman. Protect yourself People! Peace & love. God bless yall.

We encourage this reckless immoral lifestyle. Just take a good look at the way females will be dressed in parade day. This alone gives us clear evidence of the direction that we are heading. This news is definitely sad but by no means surprising.

I know of a few who are positive. They caught it after traveling for sex and continue to sleep with random men and women unprotected. I believe alot of those people who are coming in unworkable permits and white people or are here illegally are intentionally spreading it.

Applicants for work permits have to pass a VD test but are not required to take an HIV test by the way. Just another symptom of the antiquated system being operated.

"but are not required to take an HIV test by the way. Just another symptom of the antiquated system being operated."

That's another symptom of the lgbtq+ It starts with them but ends with us not 'discriminating' against people with HIV by asking them to take a test upon entry.

I have nothing against LGTBQ+ but why are we locking people up for weed when ALL this is going on?????? F me. wait wait nvm dont. X'D
