RT Festival Village is now fully secured, says contractors
Same venue but more protected, realising the condition of the fence surrounding the location in Road Town where the Road Town August Festival activities are kept, the Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron Walwyn saw it fit to replace the old fence.
Supervisors of the project Jay Archibald and David Fonseca, informed this news site that the old fence needed replacing because of the damages that were done to it from the sea blast, corrosion and intruders.
“Part of the fence on the northern end, people already use to climb over it, so the fence was leaning and providing easy access,” said Mr. Archibald. “The fence was already damaged by the sea blast and corrosion. It already did its time and needed changing.”
The reconstruction of the fence began on July 3, 2012, and is expected to finish the week before festival begins. They stated that they were given a three-week deadline to finish the job and within one week they are practically finished. “We are doing good work where we are working day and night and are above schedule... Whatever work you give the guys on the block, don’t care how big, how small or how difficult, we can execute it. The time frame given to do the work we did not need it,” said Archibald.
With the front and the north side of the fence being replaced, Mr. Archibald said the site will be safer for people who will be attending the festivities. The old fence is being taken down and replaced with a new one with concrete enforcement at the bottom.
Fonseca explained that if the fence was not replaced, the people living in the Virgin Islands would have changed their minds about attending anything on the grounds because of the way it looked.
He said “now that we are repairing it, the people can see that this is serious and that this year is different.”
He added that the new fence brought some security for the vendors that are going to be at the festival, where the fence will be sturdy and persons cannot get in to rob, as well as the festival will be able to earn more money due to the fact that no intruders would be able to get in.
They commended Hon. Walwyn, stating that he is doing a great job. Mr. Archibald stated that the fence was something that was needed and is being done at the right time by the Minister.
The festivities for the 2012 Emancipation Festival will kick off on July 26, 2012 at the Road Town Festival Village with the Gospel Fest and opening of the Claudette Boopie Smith Festiville.
