ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - “Don’t give up, don’t give in. With hope substance abuse cannot win,” submitted by Romana Peters is the Sandy Lane Centre slogan for the upcoming Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Awareness month to be observed in January 2012.

According to a Government Information Service (GIS) press release, Ms. Peters, a Morgan and Morgan Trust Corporation Limited employee, was among 32 individuals who participated in the competition.

She said, “I thought that it would be a good idea to contribute what should be the slogan for the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Awareness month.”

Sandy Lane Manager Andrea Hamm said that “the management and staff of the Centre were delighted by the great response for the first slogan competition.”

She added, “The Centre has planned several events aimed at engaging various sectors. Members of the community are encouraged to participate.”

Activities for the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Awareness month include a church service, poetry and arts competition and a concert.

Ms. Peters’ prize for winning the competition included a fruit basket and a new Kindle Touch, which will be released world-wide on November 21.

The Sandy Lane Centre, established in 1995, operates as a unit within the Ministry of Health and Social Development. Its mission includes providing drug and alcohol rehabilitation to those in the Virgin Islands suffering from addiction, using a holistic approach to recovery.

Ah wondering if that statement is true, "providing drug and rehabilitation to those in the Virgin Islands suffering from addition, using a holistic approach to recovery. If that is so, why was some of the addicts put out of the Sandy Lane who really, really had need help. That whole place need revamping and taking a second look of its purpose. The time has come for us as a people to be honest with ourselves and seek to help those who are helpless and really need help. I know of many that was there at Sandy Lane that struggled on a daily basis to get off drugs. Every time they fail, the centre put them out. Is that the holistic approach we talking about. Jesus Himself did not give up on people, so why are losing heart in our people who really need our help. Just curious to know!!!!
