ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Road Town Jetty Mural was unveiled on Friday, November 15, 2024, by the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA).

The mural themed ‘Celebrating the People and Places of the BVI’ was designed and painted by local artist Tia Modeste who won the Mural Commission in July 2024.

Managing Director of the BVIPA Mr. Akeem R. Pickering said the mural represents everything VI. “We are happy that when our guests come in they can be able to see and witness part of our heritage, part of our culture as they come to enjoy our beautiful British Virgin Islands,” he added.

I wanted to depict all parts of the BVI- Tia Modeste

In describing the mural Miss Modeste said, “In terms of our culture and our history I wanted to definitely depict all parts of the BVI from Virgin Gorda to Anegada.”

The mural displays the Moko Jumbie, the VI flag, lobsters on Anegada, the August Monday Parade, pelicans, the VI map displaying all the islands, the National Flower among other important VI symbols.

The rope which boarders the mural she explained “depicts the ports of entry” while the anchor “represents the Port Authority”.

Miss Modeste added, “I am very proud for this piece that I created for the Virgin Islands.”

I congratulate Tia Modeste on her recently unveiled mural on the theme of postage stamps that reflect the islands culture and history.

In the 1890's I was commissioned by the Crown Agents to design two series of postage stamps on the theme of traditional boat building in the BVI. One of the series can be viewed on my blog post titled "Virgin Island Nostalgia" and can be viewed at: https://sculpturestudiodominica.blogspot.com/2022/05/virgin-island-nostalgia.html
