GLASGOW, Scotland- Virgin Islands’ sprinter Rikkoi A.R. Brathwaite narrowly missed out on qualifying for the Men’s 60M Finals at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland on Friday, March 1, 2024.

Competing in Heat 2 of the Semi-finals, Brathwaite ran a new Season’s Best of 6.60 seconds, placing 4th in his Heat and 12th overall of 50 competitors, narrowly missing being raked in the top eight to make the finals of the 60m.

“I came out and gave my all and while my goal was to make it to the finals I am satisfied with my performance,” Brathwaite stated after the race.

Recognising that the Olympics is near-approaching, Brathwaite stated, “I ran sub 10 last season in the 100m, it is only a matter of time before I do the same again. Training is going well, and I am actually just getting started with my speed work. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be competing again outdoors representing the BVI proudly.”

Brathwaite currently resides and trains in the Orlando area under the tutelage of Coach Jean-Carlos Arroyo (Coach JC).

He holds the titles of BVI National Record Holder in the 60m and 100m, 2X Semifinalist qualifier at World Indoor Championships, CAC Games 100m bronze medalist, repeat BIG 10 Conference Champion, Carifta Games bronze medalist, NCAA Division 1 silver and bronze medalist, amongst many other reputable athletic titles.

Beyonce A. Defreitas places 5th in Heat

Meanwhile, Beyonce A. Defreitas ran 7.44 seconds in Heat 2 of 7 placing 5th in a non-advancing time to the semifinals of the World Indoor Championships on March 2, 2024.

Defreitas’ Heat was won by Ewa Swoboda of Poland, in 7.02 seconds, who later went on to secure a silver medal in the finals of the 60m.

The event was won by Julien Alfred, of St Lucia, with a time of 6.98 seconds. It is St Lucia’s first World Indoor Championship medal.

According to the BVI Athletics Association, Beyonce will now transition to outdoors as she seeks to make the Olympic Games qualifier in the 100m and 200m.

Continue in your journey to your goal. There will be ups and downs but do not give up or be discouraged. If it was easy everybody would be at the finish line. As God told David.....pursue.

You need to stop showing your level of ignorance. Rikkoi represents the country. He may not be the fastest in the world, but he is the fastest which our country has at the time, and that is still deserving of recognition. Just how you took the time to type out what you thing you do a lot for people here. Let us talk about the "calypso" you write. Which one of them can be taken regionally or even internationally and get recognition??? Who besides the minor few here will sing them? At least he is able to be competing among other world competitors. Still waiting to see you perform in St. Thomas Village, or better yet hear that you were invited to play at a "jam" at minimum in some other caribbean islands on a frequent basis.

I don't know the young man, but I respect his agenda to be an athelete. I can't even walk to the supermarket from my car much less run around a track. You win some, you lose some. Keep gping. Keep training and keep your positive focus.

When a person in athletics is injured, nobody or no country feels the pain for them. Thank you for taking the BVI to where it is. When you make it in the big leagues please maintain humility.
