Richard C. de Castro calls bank charges ‘robbery’
He was speaking on his Speak Your Mind television talk show last night August 22, 2015 on JTV Live Channel 55.
A caller alleged that the bank he was with was charging a fee for him to withdraw monies not only by using the atm machine but also in the bank in front of a teller.
The man insisted that he was charged a fee of $2.00 when he went to withdraw his own money from his account.
Host de Castro advised the man to take the issue up with the bank as it did not sound right. He noted this is usual when one goes to an atm belonging to another bank other than where the account is located.
"That is my money I put inside there," the irate man said on the show.
To this de Castro said, "Maybe you have to shop around to other banks because I know some banks don't do that."
The man said too that this is not just for the atm but for the teller as well. He said he was made to pay the $2.00 fee when inside the bank making a withdrawal in front of the teller.
"They told me that just yesterday," the caller said.
"In that case if that is what they are doing I would just take my money out of that bank and put it in another bank because that's robbery," said de Castro.
He noted that while every bank has a right to make its policies people don't have to blindly follow them; they are free to shop around to different banks.
“We have some anomalies with the various banks in the territory and as I was saying to the caller we need to step up the vigilance with them and ensure that they are not doing anything unscrupulous. Charging a customer for saving their money should not be tolerated in this community,” he said.
He said that in his view an atm machine eliminates the need for a teller so he cannot understand why banks are charging for the use of atms in the first place.
Meanwhile, another called supported what the previous caller had said about the bank charges. "He ain't telling no lie," the female caller said.
