ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – What was initially intended to be entertainment has backfired for Sir Richard Branson who has attracted some negative criticism from an international media entity following the airing of a documentary of his private island in the Virgin Islands.

The internationally recognised online news site The Independent raised questions of segregation of Western and Caribbean employees by Branson in a recent publication of theirs captioned, “Segregation, sunshine and bikini-clad staff - what we learned from Richard Branson's Necker Island documentary”.

According to The Independent, “Richard Branson showed the world his private Caribbean holiday island (and business HQ) last night, leaving millions of viewers reeling.”

It said that almost three million people watched as the super-rich Virgin founder revealed his A-list holiday destination, which he bought for £120,000 in 1979 and is now worth £60million, on BBC2's fly-on-the-wall documentary Billionaire's Paradise: Necker Island.

“Branson said that he tried to ban relations between guests and staff but that lasted for a week at the £40k-a-night holiday resort, which is a favourite among household names, including Harry Styles.”That is not the way the island would run very well," Branson said, according to The Independent.

It further stated that the documentary showed a picture of Branson kite surfing with a naked woman wrapped around him, hinting at his holiday destination's carefree atmosphere and relaxed dress code.

“Branson, who is worth an estimated £3billion, works in flop-flops and T-shirts with his two blonde assistants by a turquoise pool, doesn't believe in office attire,” The Independent stated.

Staff wears shorts or bikinis to work, and accountant Millie spoke of her delight at being a naked "hot girl" for guests to eat sushi off at a recent party. On Twitter, however, many questioned Branson's policy of keeping Western employees on luxurious Necker itself, while Caribbean staff stayed in neighbouring island Virgin Gorda.

It also said that in the programme, Branson repeatedly said he liked to keep the identities of A-list guests a secret, but did show off pictures of Princess Diana and sons William and Harry frolicking in the sea.

What was particular interesting to me was 1.The pictures taken with the staff living on Virgin Gorda. It shown a class of poor living and he was doing those persons a great favour by working for him. 2. The Kiteboarding chap who said that before he began working with Necker he has to work for ten days as a trial before he was granted or given a work permit. (This is interesting given that the Labour Code makes provision for probationary periods) and 3. We as BVIslanders finally know the cost of Mosquito Islands, the documentary stated Richard bought it for 10 million pounds in 2007. What a thing.

What favor is he doing them when they make 3 times less than the "western" staff.... imagine half the "western employees" come to necker as a friend of a friend and don't know their a** from their elbow ..the caribbean staff have to train
them and yet they still tend to make more, still collect gratuity (mind you on their work permit it indicates that they do not collect such and still get free room and board...

Come on now- we all know the dirty little secret in the British Virgin Islands- that there are wealthy w---e separatists who love it here - because it can take them back to a place where MASSA is once again BOSS- separate schools- separate clubs- separate parties- you name it - and now they have a party of fawning politicians who will give them everything they desire-

Yes! Separate schools. They may have other races but one race is more dominant. I witness kids pass by and ignored others, but as they pass whites they said good day. They are being raised racist right here in our BVI

You are clearly ignorant and are another with a racist agenda. Expat children are not permitted at the local schools. A private school was set up, it does not discriminate, any one can go. The BVI has the highest number of students. That school is probably the least discriminatory place in the Territory but carry on with your ignorant attitude, I am sure it meets yours and may others agenda.

I can agree with most, but where his children or anyone else was born has nothing to do with it. BVI citizenship derives from parentage, not from birthplace. Therefore, his children are BVIslanders because he is, not because they were born here. He would understand this himself, since that is British law as well. No "anchor babies" here or there.

Just wondering, those who go to Virgin Gorda, don't they live there? Aren't they residence who are basically returning home from their work day, much like those who work Guana Island, Scrub Island, Peter Island etc. I'm just asking, I didn't see the documentary, but I would think its easier and cheaper to have expat employees who did not initially reside in the BVI, specifically VG, to stay on the compound rather than to pay for their housing on a neighboring island. Let's just be fair in all of this criticizing of this billionaire who I'm sure does more for the Territory than most of you are aware of.

This man has given millions to organizations like the ONE campaign; working with Bono to feed and fight disease to millions in Africa. You can't make change happen by sitting back and complaining. Well I am white and I worked at Necker Island and I didn't live on island. What's more my mixed race son went to the same school as the manager's children and there was a mix of white, black, mixed race and indian children at the school. The white kids were definitely not in the majority. My son later went to a local primary school because he is a BVI Islander but non of his white friends could get a place there, so I think you have the racism mixed up a little.
. Mr Branson is a very caring man, as are the General Managers, they take the happiness of their staff very seriously regardless of race. I worked all over Virgin Gorda during my nine years and of all the places I worked the Necker Island staff were treated best. I think some people need to stop using the word racism as an excuse to hate monger....and also look up the definition in the dictionary!

The Westerners stay on Necker and the Caribbean Staff stay on Virgin Gorda. Well, he need to present the master race to his guests and the other kind of semi people must not be seen. Look at all his Youtube Videos of how uncomfortable he looks shaking hands with the other people. example Foxy in JVD. The image he want to present to the world is a blond hair blue eyed person in a tropical jungle with swans etc... His utopia. So more and more people who don't know anything about the caribbean would want to come. This is the caribbean he presents to the world, like the christians present a blond hair blue eyed Jesus and we all know that is not true. The other people just don't fit into his marketing plan. These are the trade off's our elected forego in the name of tourism.

Firstly, if any of you actually took the time to watch the documentary you would have noticed the Richard actually said that the guests at the time requested that the staff do not mix with them for what ever reason and obviously on Necker, they make it their number one duty to meet all guest request no matter what! Guests come to the island for seclusion and sadly, some people just do not like to "mix" with others. Richard should take some of the blame but most of it should be placed upon the wealthy individuals who visit the Island. Affluent individuals - mostly white - have been known to be quite racist and in my opinion, the way Branson runs his business, supports this. A recent article I read states that a key feature in why people love the British Virgin Islands is because the local people are very kind and show great sincerity when people visit their lovely islands, Branson should take note.
