Rey O'Neal Invitational cancelled due to COVID surge
Our newsroom was informed that the BVI Athletics Association (BVIAA) Executive has decided to cancel the Rey O'Neal Invitational due to the dramatic rise in COVID-19 cases in the territory, including via community spread.
The VI currently has recorded some 91 active cases, 42 of which are new.
Safety a 'priority'
According to the BVIAA, the safety of all stakeholders is paramount.
"While this is disappointing we believe that it is in the best interest of all stakeholders that we make safety the priority.
"It is not certain at this time if the meet will be rescheduled. After further consultation and considerations over the next week, we will provide additional updates," a statement from the BVIAA this morning, July 2, 2021, read.
Male and female sprinters in various age groups were set to compete in the 100 metres, Long Jump, 400m, Discuss, 100m Hurdles, 800m, Shot Put, 200m and 4x100m.
