Residents to be cautioned when in CCTV camera zone!
Approximately 16 cameras are being installed at specified points on Tortola, which will help the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) to deter anti-social behaviours, assist in the identification, arrest and prosecution of offenders, and enable immediate deployment of law enforcement officers to strategic locations.
In explaining the reason for placing the signs, Morris said, “It’s in a public domain...We are not going to say that the cameras are right above your head or the camera in on the third pole. Under the legislation and human rights people have a right to privacy, and we have to abide by that. It happens in the United States, United Kingdom and other countries".
While the cameras are being tested, the Force cannot use them until the Closed Circuit Television Act is introduced and passed in the House of Assembly.
Governor Boyd McCleary during his Speech from the Throne on December 8, 2011 said Government will work aggressively to have that piece of legislation tabled in the HOA.
Under the previous administration, the Virgin Islands Party (VIP), a $308,682 contract was inked with Electronic Solutions on February 4, 2011 to purchase the CCTV cameras.
Meanwhile, Morris stated that the Control Room, located at the police headquarters, is being outfitted to ensure that operations run smoothly when the cameras are “up and running”.
