Residents outraged at rampant cattle in Sea Cows Bay
The residents expressed that the cows have been a nuisance for decades, wandering into yards and even houses destroying property in the process and scaring persons who were caught off guard at their presence.
There seems to be no relief in sight as after numerous complaints to the authorities and owners of the animals alike about the danger and annoyance that the animals pose, no solutions have been forthcoming.
One resident related to this news site yesterday September 1, 2012 that, “I have a fear… when I locked my house and I came back my house was open and it was open for quite a while…. more than four hours… [the cow] just burst open the door, stayed there and went [back] out; and my door was locked... I was so shocked.”
“I am feeling scared because [the cows] can do it in the night,” she said.
With frustration etched in her voice she complained that, “Every day my yard is full of [manure] and I have a young grandson who rides on the road and the cows are always charging them.”
The owners she noted, were spoken to several times over the years about the situation and nothing had ever been done about it. “It affects me all the time…” she continued, “every time I have [manure] in my yard… when the children are riding their bikes [the cows] charge the children.”
“I drive [everywhere] because I’m scared of the cows… in the night time you can’t rest because they keep butting at the house.”
She offered that the nuisance is made worse by un-fenced houses in the area; this allows the cows uninhibited access to persons’ yards where they damage property, eat plants and enter homes freely as if they were invited guests, startling children and the elderly in the process.
Another resident, who said she resided near the government cemetery area, protested about the damage caused to her jeep by the cows; she expressed that she had been complaining to authorities constantly and wasn’t being taken seriously.
The resident said that she called as recently as two weeks before the Carnival season and no one had bothered to show up so far even though she was promised that someone would come to address the matter.
“The supervisor [at the Agriculture Department] promised me he’d get somebody to come down here but I haven’t seen nobody since,” she related.
She further stated that, “The cows drink the water [stored] in the drums… they come around looking for water all the time.”
This news site contacted Chief Agricultural Officer (CAO) in the Agriculture Department, Mr Bevin Brathwaite yesterday during the afternoon about the issue and was told that he was not aware of the matter and preferred to be contacted during office hours to deal with any issues.
“To be frank," Brathwaite said, "I would think that when you call [at this time] on a matter that it would be a more pressing emergency.”
