ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has beat down claims that his government is discouraging businesses on St Thomas, United States Virgin Islands, from supplying individual residents in the [British] Virgin Islands (VI) with groceries and other items.

Earlier today, May 12, 2020, texts circulating on social media accused the VI government of "dictatorship" in an alleged attempt to keep monies in the Territory by forcing residents to solely support local businesses.

“What dictatorship are we running in this country. Fast Ferry is rendering svc to people. The govt gone to the extreme by calling Kesha at Cost U Less and telling her don't box any food supplies for Tortola customers. How low can you go?? Then on top of that advising the ferry to off load at Port Purcell. If they want the residents to buy BVI then they should speak to the local supermarkets to lower their prices to facilitate the local consumers to shop locally. They are way out of order if they are indulging in this ludacris mentality. You can't tell the residents where to spend their money.”

In response, Premier Fahie said it is his government that has granted permission to a local ferry service to transport supplies ordered in St Thomas by VI residents.

“It would be ludicrous for the BVI government to approve a boat to go to St Thomas and then the government itself calls the business places and tell them don’t give the boat the goods. We could have cut that off from here by telling the boat you can’t go.”

'It sounds juicy'

Warning persons to desist from spewing false information and allegations, Premier Fahie said, “I don’t know where that is coming from, it sounds juicy but as far as us, as elected officials, the Cabinet, that is not so. I really can't answer where the origin of this is …. I myself would advise persons to be cautious with what they are saying.”

Premier Fahie said; however, that a decision was taken for the ferry to be offloaded at the Port Purcell Dock for the short term. This, he said, would require persons going through the regular process as bigger cargo entering the Territory.

“When you dealing with so much stuff coming from any port, it's not just a regular ferry run, so many grocery or whatever the case may be in terms of cargo coming over that now has to go to Port Purcell to ensure that all the protocols to safeguard the persons on the boat, those who have to check the boat, those who receiving the goods, can be adhered to and that is most effective right now at Port Purcell.”

Meanwhile, some persons were utilising barges to bring in groceries and other supplies to the Territory from St Thomas but noted that it is costly to pay the barges as well as for the preparation of the Customs Trade Declaration (T12).

Port Purcell can’t even manage the normal cargo coming in on a regular, and to add more is a total mess!
Glad I got my stuff on Saturday.
You can’t go out and now you got all this red tape to bring stuff in.

This story makes no sense. Why would our Government deny people from getting things from abroad, when we have shipments coming in all of the time? Our government has made sure the stores are fully stocked and merchandise and food are getting to us from the USVI. Our store shelves are full and we need nothing. I remember when hurricane Irma hit us, which can happen again this hurricane season, we were crying in the streets begging for food and help. Since this Pandemic has occurred, our Government has kept us as safe as they could and made sure we have a lot of things we ordered from outside. I for one am very grateful for what we have. Everything cannot be perfect in our un-perfect world anymore, but our Government is trying and they cannot please everyone all of the time. Have patience people, things may go slow, but we will survive this hurdle too. Remember, we are one of the lucky islands.

I love this, because you need nothing, no one else does.
I can't get flour for baking bread on island.
      I can't get bread.
Of course I can get facsimiles of both, chock full of every preservative you can and can't name. Aren't we admonished to keep ourselves and our families as healthy as possible at this time? Who are you to judge me for trying to bake healthy bread for my family?

I don't know how you cook for your family. It's not my place to judge. I don't know if you have a family. It's none of my business.

The fact that I'd like to order goods I can't buy on island from St Thomas is none of yours. Unless you want to make an economic argument FOR keeping a local ferry company afloat and at least some of it's staff working.

Are you serious? I am a Great Grandmother. I have raised 3 generations! We are on a small pension and Social Security. I bake my own bread and have not seen any shortage of flour on island. I have a small garden so I can eat fresh and don't have to buy, I catch my rainwater and boil it so I don't have to buy all of those plastic bottles you are using, I don'y buy soda and alcohol, I have fruit trees to make juice, I do buy fish. I eat what I need, so why did you assume I am living high on the hog. Yes, I cook for my husband and myself daily, Hot cereal, not expensive box cereal you may be buying. I have learned to live off the land and you should try it. You would save a lot of money. I really pity young ones who, in case of a catastrophe, would not know how to survive and it is quite simple.

People in the BVI have life too good. When you read about the real hardships others are experiencing in other places we are bless. We did not have to leave our homes with no ID to get the Government Food packages, they were delivered to us. How many said thanks instead we complain whe get most. We need to stop being so ungrateful. Give thanks to Lord for the Government we have .

This is a play on words. Yes the gov. has not stopped boat delivery from St. Thomas but by making the goods unload at Port Purcell and having to get clearance papers done and all the added costs they have in essence stopped the ferry delivery from St. Thomas

I thought the aim was to circulate the money in the BVI. When other people try to send out theirs it becomes a big issue. Shop at home the money should be circulated within the BVI economy. Support local businesses.

****** and funnyman trying to make VIP government look bad. He must be sensitive to the family when posing his questions. Premier Fahie I know you can handle anyone of those media questions because you can't be private in the public. Mr. PREMIER don't be pressured by these guys. Your government is doing a good job.

Yes, they are doing a good job and I'm tired of people second guessing and playing games at a time like this- BUT- sometimes the people have to point out their needs. The Premier is one man. He has to rely on people to give him information. It doesn't look like he always gets the whole picture. Goodness knows he is trying.

Maybe the Premier should consider getting rid of the huge duty we pay on imported goods. Money that just rolls into the empty well of the account general's slush fund. Make the BVI competitive with St. Thomas - let properly licensed firms import the goods they are licensed to vend duty free! The government drives up our day-to-day costs around here by more than 20%.

Why are shoppers procuring goods from St. Thomas, our friendly neighbor to the west(no diss intended just asking the question)? Is there an economic scarcity of goods to meet the local demand? Or is it the rising cost of living in the VI? Is there an income effect going on, ie, the increase in good prices reducing the purchasing power of income? Is the purchases from St. Thomas a more variety issue? Is not it interesting that shoppers shop in St. Thomas, pay transportation cost, pay duty on some goods and expend precious time yet feel they get a better deal in St. Thomas? Is something wrong with local businesses business plans? Is something rotten in the state of Denmark?
