Reports of swine flu (H1N1) outbreak in VI are false- BVIHSA
"Concerns have been raised about a swine flu outbreak mentioned in recent social media messages. We want to assure you that the BVIHSA has found no evidence to support these claims. No confirmed cases of this strain have been reported," BVIHSA stated in a Facebook post on Wednesday, January 24, 2024.
The H1N1 flu, sometimes called swine flu, is a type of influenza A virus.
According to Mayo Clinic, during the 2009-10 flu season, a new H1N1 virus began causing illness in humans. It was often called swine flu and was a new combination of influenza viruses that infect pigs, birds and humans.
Get vaccinated- BVIHSA
BVIHSA noted; however, that respiratory diseases are on the rise, including COVID-19, influenza, rhinovirus, and pneumonia, and stressed the importance of preventive measures.
It urged the VI population to get vaccinated against Influenza and COVID-19 to reduce the risk of severe symptoms and curb the spread.
BVIHSA also urged the vulnerable populations to get the pneumococcal vaccine.
General preventive measures such as practicing good hand hygiene, covering coughs and sneezes, wearing masks, ensuring well-ventilated spaces, and staying home when unwell were also advised.
"Rest assured, the BVIHSA is actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed. For more information or interviews, feel free to reach out to us directly. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation," BVIHSA stated.
