Reports of persons entering VI & breaching quarantine order untrue- Premier
There have since been reports on social media, nevertheless, that persons have been breaking this order.
According to Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1); however, the reports have turned out to be false.
While speaking on the bill entitled ‘Virgin Islands Consumer Protection Act 2019’ during the Eighth Sitting of the Second Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) at the Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff's Bottom, Tortola, today, June 8, 2020, Premier Fahie brought up the issue while making the point that reports brought against businesses will be investigated by a commission to protect against false accusations.
“That is done so you can protect the name of the business, because we know we live in a Territory that is long on rumours and short on facts. And the rumours get out there, especially on social media now, it gets out there so heavy, Mr Speaker.”
Fake news!
He said only this weekend Government had to address some rumours circulating on social media.
“We heard some rumours this weekend about persons who came in and they about on the streets and we went and we looked into all of those, Mr Speaker, and up to now, up to this point, we have found them not to be factual.
“But, Mr Speaker, if you talk to most people in the BVI it is out there so heavy it seems like the truth, because there is 24-hour security. Yes, there are areas they have to adjust but not to the level or to the point like what we have seen coming on social media.”
The Premier said some names were provided; however, they turned out not to be persons who recently arrived in the Territory.
“And when we checked on the names these persons were here before the first lockdown but they were inside and didn’t come out. Now they see them they say they got here all of a sudden and then persons saying how come.”
According to Hon Fahie, one of the persons that posted about the issue on social media was asked about it.
“They said it was a friend that told them.
“But if you didn’t see it don’t post it,” Premier Fahie urged.
He added; however, that in the areas where they are issues, Government is going to deal with them.
“This is not to get into a mode of trying to cover up anything but it tells us whether it is Consumer Protection or COVID-19 or whatever we have a civic duty to report directly so we could get these things dealt with, even if you do it confidentially.”
