ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- According to a report submitted to Cabinet, a proposal for a new facility to accommodate the works of the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), divided into two phases, is estimated to cost over $4.6 million.

The report that was submitted by the DDM, in the House of Assembly on July 24, 2012 stated that, Phase one of the new site, which will include the lower ground floor and retaining walls, will cost over $2.9 mil, with the second phase, that includes the first floor, external works and demolition activities, costing over $1.7 mil.

According to the 2011 report, Cabinet agreed to the construction of the new facility that is expected to be built at their current location in MacNamara, Tortola.

It read that cabinet also invited the Governor to submit proposals on the selection of a design consultant.

The report stated that a geo-technical study was done in September 2010 and the Public Works Department completed the architectural drawings for the new building and the structural drawings were prepared, which led to all the reports being submitted to Cabinet for endorsement and the Town and Country Planning Department for approval by the Planning Authority.

Along with the reports, a request was also submitted by the DDM for the new facility to be done in two phases with construction slated to begin in 2012 and 2013.
