Renaming TPP had no political intent - Mark H. Vanterpool
Hon Vanterpool, an incumbent of district four under the Hon Dr D. Orlando Smith (AL) and Myron V. Walwyn (AL) led National Democratic Party (NDP 1) was instrumental in the renaming project that saw the late Chief Minister having his name engraved in time.
Promises fulfilled
Daughter of Mr Romney, Ms Patricia M. Romney aka “Patty” said that in the events leading up to the renaming, “I faintly heard a promise from a familiar voice from the podium. I immediately picked up my cell phone and made a call to say, Mommy… Mark is at it again making promises about your husband.”
She implored, “His words in a nutshell were, CB must be recognized for his role in BVI cruise tourism and it will happen under his watch,” she told those gathered at the renaming ceremony.
In showing appreciation for the efforts she said, “Minister Vanterpool, I think we share one regret; that your long-time friend, our mom, didn’t get to see this day… You can rest assured however, she would be proud of your efforts and surely is smiling down on us with him right now from the heavens. The strength of CB’s character left many desirous to emulate him.”
Personal Commitment
Mr Vanterpool, while reiterating that the project had no political intent, says it was solely him fulfilling his commitment to having it done before he remits office ahead of the government term.
In a February 13, 2019, released, he said, “I am pleased and have the privilege to be in the right place at the right time, to honour a gentleman who has contributed greatly to his country, the British Virgin Islands.”
While the TPP under the watch of Mr Vanterpool has been rocked by scandals with an overrun of some $40M and allegations of corruption, many residents of the Virgin Islands supports the renaming.
However, due to the timing of the renaming just days before General Elections, many believe is it just another NDP 1 political gimmick.
