MAIN STREET, Road Town, Tortola, VI- Rehabilitation works have begun on the Old Administration Building on Main Street, Tortola following initial delays caused by the passage of Tropical Storm Ernesto.

A press release on Thursday, August 29, 2024, from the Office of the Deputy Governor said the project will see the rehabilitation of the front-facing façade.

This also includes the replacement of structural support members and all metallic features to make these aspects safer for pedestrians and motor vehicles.

Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Sharleen S. DaBreo-Lettsome, MBE said, “The Old Administration Building on Main Street represents a vital period in the history of the Virgin Islands and the Public Service and we must do whatever is possible to maintain the integrity of these historical structures. The Old Administration Building provided a solid foundation for some of the Public Service’s earliest days and we must do whatever is necessary to preserve the history that these walls hold.”

GND Construction was awarded the contract for the project and the first phase of the rehabilitation process is expected to be completed by November 2024.

Motorists and pedestrians are asked to exercise caution when traversing the area.

What is the cost of this, and do we not have more pressing and urgent needs.

Was a structural engineer engaged to conduct a structural analysis of the aged historical building before embarking on the renovation? The aesthetics of the facade is secondary; the structural quality, strength and sufficiency should be primary to ensure good money is not fling bad. How long has the building being sitting in disrepair, deteriorating, etc. Since the building is a historical building does the renovation project include matching the original material as close as possible and practical ? What is the qualification of the project manager? Hear is a news flash. A new building sitting idle will start to deteriorate; an old building will deteriorate much faster, requiring extensive work. Are all public facilities under a central facility manager or each agency manages its own facilities? What is the plant replacement value (PRV) of public facilities and what dollar amount invested in their maintenance and repair annually? How much churn is done annually?

Correct me if I’m wrong. Are we focusing solely on the external repair of the building instead of addressing its overall condition? Which would make financial sense to do.

If it belongs to GOV, addressing the overall condition of the building can bring financial benefits in various ways. For instance relocating some of the Government Offices back there could reduce some of the rental cost government pay out, significantly.

Let’s persevere history, let’s persevere the entire building.

What happen to the previous contract and contractor..? What's going on with DDM new building. Why did it stop and not finished. Why can't we turn Prospect into a Mega admin building.. We need to reduce our rent bill..I mean reduce drastically.

After all that were done and said, in reference to the Topic Issue, co-operation on the CoI recommendations for both the UK and the British Virgin Islands for better governance is far better than unnecessary confrontation.
The BVI is here and will stay. The UK is here and will stay, if chosen.

In this world of rising negatives and uncertainties a now tiny tiny Overseas Territory of the UK, namely British Virgin Islands would be hard pressed by many and far greater world powers to fend off their preditory attempt to acquire a slice or more of our assets, and add to theirs.

I hope that you, or rather most of us have the insight to understand that in this competitive world with air to acquire more there is no draw. There must be a winner. The stronger will win, the weaker must suffer loss.

No one should even think in their mind that been and being under another country's rules is without pushback, but great strength is found where people are united, not so widely divided as the people of the BVI in time past and presently is.
Maybe, just maybe one day the UK may decide to and give the British Virgin independence, but if so when?
As many and I see are able to see our Spiritual, mental, greeeedy political tragetory mindset, independence in the short term for us is no more than a selfish and distructive dream.

Many and I hope that sooner rather than later all 48, or 49, or 50, whichever number is correct, will shortly be done.

GOD IS LOVE AND LOVE IS GOD. Amen.
