Region showing increased signs of storm activities – DDM
Tropical Storm Gamma formed Friday, October 2, 2020, and became the 24th Storm of the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season and is impacting the Yucatan Peninsula, Cuba and some Mexican States an update from the department said.
Three disturbances being monitored
Further, the Department said it is monitoring three other disturbances with Disturbance 1 moving west and may develop into a depression while moving in the same vicinity as Gamma.
“Current weather conditions being experienced locally is being enhanced by this system in addition to a trough in the area. Conditions are expected to improve as the system continues to move away.”
Disturbance 3 is several thousand miles southeast of Bermuda and is producing showers and thunderstorms with a 10 per cent chance of development and Disturbance 2 is along 40W, or about midway between Africa and the Lesser Antilles.
Disturbance not a threat to VI at the moment - DDM
“There continues to be no model guidance support for development, however, the system's already robust atmospheric rotation and moisture have managed to become more impressive over the last 24 hours. In addition, heavy thunderstorms have increased in organization,” the DDM warned.
Currently, the system is not a threat to the Virgin Islands at this time, however, the DDM said monitoring will continue and further updates on any changes will be provided to the VI public.
