Records tumble at weekend’s Powerlifting Championships

Three of the records were set in the junior category including two by Elderd Henry, a student of the Elmore Stoutt High School, who competed in the 120plus category. Henry excited the crowd with a new junior deadlift record of 585lbs.
He also set a new junior squat record of 495lbs and a best bench of 295lbs.
Other junior competitors that competed from the Elmore Stout High School were Kevin Vanterpool, the winner of the 59k category followed closely by Team-mate Randall Thomas in the same category. Young Ebenezer Joseph, also of the Elmore Stoutt High School, placed second in the 74k category.
Another junior lifter Phillip Hines, competing in the 120k open category, set a new deadlift record of 620lbs. The previous record of 615 was held by Enious Pickering set in 2007.
Shaian Vandenberg, a junior of Top Notch Fitness Club who competed in the 52k category, set a new record in deadlift with a lift of 315lbs. She had a best bench-press of 115.5lbs, followed by a best squat of 225.5lbs.
Cliff Williams set a new bench-press record of 440lbs. Williams was the previous record holder of 430lbs set in 2007.
A total of 20 competitors, including 1 female, took to the stage on Sunday.
In March 2013 the BVI Powerlifting Federation is hoping to travel to St. Thomas to compete in the 6th NAPF Caribbean Islands Bench Press/Powerlifting Championships.
