‘Ready Committee’ launched to support the VIP
To this end a group of like-minded persons between the ages of 18 and 35 from the Virgin Islands have come together in strong support of the Opposition Virgin Islands Party (VIP).
The group is named ‘Ready Committee’ because they are ready to rally around the VIP and advocate for the needs of the Territory’s youths on issues such as meaningful jobs, educational opportunities, and support in becoming entrepreneurs.
The Ready Committee hosted a formal meeting on January 17, 2015.
The youth group, which is already 40 members strong and growing with members including the sister islands, will be announcing some fundraising events shortly and will also be hosting a press conference so other youths and the public can be informed of the Youth group’s aims, goals and objectives.
The Ready Committee’s slogan is ‘ONE DIRECTION: FORWARD!’ and part of its mandate and vision is to give the youths of the Virgin Islands a platform where their voices can be heard.
It is also the mission of the group to assist the Virgin Islands Party with its youth empowerment initiatives.
Mr Rajah A. Smith, a young businessman, youth leader and political activist, is the group’s current President and a founding member of the organisation.
Mr. Smith said, “As young Virgin Islanders, it’s time to take a stand in our country, and be around the table when decisions are made on our behalf, as the youths are the ones that knows what's best for us.”
The Youth Leader, who is seeking the VIP nomination in the Congress to be an At-Large candidate in the next general elections, said, “we are here not only as supporters of the VIP, but movers of a generation.”
When contacted, Smith told this news site that while the VIP has always had a functioning youth arm, he saw the need to bring into being a separate entity with a national scope and mandate. “I want to say that the Virgin Islands Party always had a youth arm but I just went out and put a national group together which will support the party,” he said.
Further, he said that at the group’s upcoming press conference, they would explain all of the initiatives and programmes that they have planned and how persons could become involved.
The esteemed Julian Willock will serve as an adviser to the group. You can look forward to seeing members of the Ready Committee as they host community meetings, public discussions, fundraisers and other events throughout the Territory.
