It was the club’s first international track meet and it was embarked upon solely for the exposure and experience.
“We accomplished what we were set out to do and also we got 5 medals. [It is the] first time running outside of the BVI except for Ryan Joseph who was a part of the 2013 BVI Carifta 4 x 400 relay team In Bahamas,” said Coach of Raw Skillz Track Club Mr Erwin S. Telemaque aka Coach Redz.
He told this news site today June 19, 2014 that it was important for the team to participate at this track meet in Miami so that when they are part of travelling teams to perform overseas it will not be their first time and they would be more focused on performing rather than having butterflies in the stomach.
“Basically the team itself is very young compared to the other clubs in Tortola. The club is only about three years old and most of my athletes have a good way to go before they could actually be constant on national teams that actually travel,” said Telemaque.
“This whole trip came about where I decided to take my club overseas to an international meet so that they can get the exposure and experience for the future, so that if they do get picked for a national team they don’t go out there and have butterflies in the beginning because it is their first time,” he said.
“This trip was for the experience and the exposure,” he said. The coach noted that the trip was a confidence builder for Ryan Joseph who competed in the Bahamas since at that time he was part of a relay team but for the Miami meet he was running on his own. "When he went to this meet he did his flat race so in essence it was his first international meet as a flat runner,” he said.
The coach thanked the people of Virgin Gorda for rallying behind the team and causing the Miami trip to become a reality. “They were the fuel behind us getting to Miami,” said Telemaque. He also thanked all of the sponsors that made the attendance to the Miami track meet possible.
Those making up the Raw Skillz team to Miami are Brian Gaston Jr., Keanu George, Gezira Alexander, Shaquana Stevens, J’Sally O’Neil, T’Keyah Richardson, Mariah Christian, Xena O’Neal, Jassnique Frederick (Bronze Medal in the 17-18 female 100m), Shaniyah Caul (Bronze Medal in the 15-16 female 400m), Ryan Joseph (Bronze Medal in the 19-29 open male 200m), Jolene Bowens (Gold Medal in the 15-16 female Shot Put) and Sephile Arthurton (Gold Medal in the 17-18 male Shot Put).
Others who accompanied the youth athletes on the trip are Lucianne Jackson – Manager, Devon-Anne-O’Neal – Chaperone and Candice Lara Wilks – Therapist.
In a statement, the Raw Skillz Track Club family and friends said it would like to thank the following sponsors for contributing to their Miami trip and making it a success. "To our Platinum sponsor Virgin Gorda Transport (Speedy’s), we say thank you for being there for us from the beginning. Your support and sponsorship made us more productive and help to build our confidence in our athletic accomplishments," the statement said.

Secondly, It is interesting to note that there was no mention of Raw Skillz's achievements on the official BVI's athletics website or any congratulations from members of Government. I'm quite sure that if this was a Tortola based track club that went up to Miami and took part in an International Track Meet and brought home medals the whole BVI would have know about it before the returned to the country. I think that the whole country should celebrate these kids achievements because it is well deserved.
Once again, CONGRATS to Raw Skillz Track Club!!!
notice there are no mentions of sponsers. It was privately
sponsered.
The race is not for the swift and the cheaters. But for the honest and fair that endureth to the END!
God don't call the qualified, he QUALIFIES you !!!
Continue on your path Redz you are a lovely Coach. Dont forget to do the certification courses.
