SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI – As the political campaign ripens in the Virgin Islands and parties begin their quest to gather the interest of especially the young and vibrant to take up leadership roles, one youth has outshone many who are considering the same. This man has now announced his interest in being a candidate on the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) list for the upcoming elections.

This is Mr Rajah A. Smith who originally hails from the sister island of Jost van Dyke but has over the years become a familiar personality especially on Tortola having been recognised as a young man who has the tenacity to face challenges head on and to step forward as a leader in many regards.

“I am ready for this but I am doing this under the VIP because I grew up under the VIP. For me the VIP is a family around me and I have had most of my mentoring under the VIP so yes I am diehard for the VIP,” he told this news site during an interview yesterday January 11, 2015.

Mr Smith said that while at this stage he would not say very much he is following the constitution of the VIP, which says that one must be elected at congress to make the party’s list of candidates that goes in for elections at the national level.

Asked what position he would be seeking should congress find favour with him, Mr Smith said while he hails from Jost van Dyke and during his earlier years had always wanted to be the representative for the district under which Jost Van Dyke falls, “I am thinking differently now that I am more mature in this thing. I would be happy to be the representative of Jost van Dyke but have a heart for the territory and wants to serve in a capacity that would allow me to reach out and to represent as many as I possibly can, so my eyes are currently on becoming At-Large,” said Mr Smith.

“It does not matter which district. What I can do for Jost van Dyke I can do for any other district of this territory but the first thing that matters at the moment is further strengthening my support base, most importantly among the people who are eligible to vote at the level of the VIP congress. I know I have strong backings,” he noted.

The young entrepreneur, who has the interest of especially youth at heart, vividly recalled a very prominent member of society telling some years ago that he has what it takes to become a good leader of this territory. “I don’t want to mention that person’s name at this stage but they had said to me that I am the future of the VIP and those words were said many years ago and I held on to it and fashioned my life in such a way that today that prophecy is so close to becoming a reality.”

Mr Rajah A. Smith said that while he is very optimistic about making the VIP’s list but if for some reason or the other he doesn’t he will continue to be a strong supporter of the VIP and would continue to dedicate his energies towards helping push the party to victory come elections day and beyond.

Rajah is a breath of fresh air in BVI politics. There is no reason why he cannot run. However, my advice to Rajah is wait four years and mature. There will be a number of posts which Rajah will be very entitled to occupy- taxi and livery Commission, ports Authority, head of airport security- BVI recreations Trust- facilities manager of Prospect reef- you name it- after Rajah has matured in one of those posts - then he will be ready to run-

I know common sense runs things but our representatives in this day and age must have the capacity/ability to understand and handle domestic and international matters on behalf of the Territory.

Now is the time ,don't wait when you can't think properly to help or make a contribution to the BVI. Remember folks like Skerritts of Dominica began his leadership role at a tender age also. Anyway I say go for it and get a positive and effective and efficient team to work with you. Oh if you are successful don't forget to be of some worth to them and also those who didnt help or vote for you. Remember one is elected to serve all the people, the VIP, NDP and those with no identity
