ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A caller to the VIP’s Let’s Talk radio programme aired on Wednesday March 18, 2015, on ZBVI 780 AM was very critical of the recently re-launched Road Town Market, claiming that it was discouraging for local farmers.

The farmer asked members of the show panel, Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) and Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), if they had checked out the new market at its re-opening on March 13, 2015.

According to the caller, the signage at the market square says ‘fresh fruits, vegetables, and local products’ but alleged that the imported produce were put up front, which was discouraging for local farmers.

He said the local farmers were unhappy because the “foreign fruits...” were on the front of the market on display. The caller added that when local farmers had heard the Premier’s Office talking about the revival of the local market they thought it was for the local farmers to sell their produce. “…but it didn’t turn out that way,” the caller said.

Farmers concerns

Even prior to the re-launching of the market, several local farmers had expressed concerns that many vendors will have imported produce and passing it off as “local”. This they believe could cast a “bad name” on all the vendors.

“What you have happening is that imported food spoils very fast and I am tired of hearing customers telling me that the stuff they buy spoiling fast and guess what they saying? Them local food, they not saying the imported food they saying them locals and that is casting a bad spell on our stuff because it’s the imported things they purchasing and being disappointed,” a farmer had told this news site.

@son of the soil. I will not agree with your comments, if the local people will think more positive and claim what is rightfully theirs then there will be limited space for the other island people as you all always refer to our Caribbean brothers and sisters. But you know what our local people refused to go and occupy their space at the market, so what are we seeing there, all those who import stuff are there occupying a space and we really cannot blame them, they come here and they try their utmost best to abide by our rules but out local people are already set in their bad ways and never like to adopt to change. I often heard the Tortola is the most lawless place in the world and sometimes the way our own people behaves we just got to accept that fact. Our local people should have been the first to cart their silly @$$e$ off the side walks and pavement and go into that market area to ply their trade. After all this is our country let us work to make it better by doing what is right

Why the separation, its their for all. Why do we always find away to criticize everything? its like local against the rest of the world and the rest of the world is stealing the local gold.---In America, the Americans white and black call all Caribbean people "Jamaican" I said I am from Tortola, they asked. Where is that?

Thank you VI for life, I really cannot see what the big fuss about. I support my local people but what we are seeing is killing ourselves. We know it's a fact that the handful of farmers here cannot grow enough food to feed this population but yet we make noise when our Caribbean neighbors bring in some provision to sell but it's all well and good when food is imported from the U.S. and Europe. We have to realize that we are a multi ethnic society and we must understand that some people living among us are accustomed to their type of food so therefore they will buy their preference and we really cannot vex because some of our own local people are the ones killing us with prices. Can u imagine that you plant a breadfruit tree, the most you have to do to it is make sure it get water but yet we have some selling a breadfruit for $2 per pound. Can you imagine that a breadfruit is 5 pounds, then you pay $10 for it. Come on, that is rediculus. A breadfruit should not cost more than $5. So u see, this is one example how we destroying ourselves

The sign clearly says ‘fresh fruits, vegetables, and local products’ . It did not say only local products. I do not see any tourist there buying food stuff in the market. Everyone who buys there knows what is locally grown and what is from the other Caribbean Islands. In any market quality and prices determine sale. I love sugar apple and I don't stop at the round-about any more to ask their prices for the sugar apple because it is outrageous. There is one lady who sells local stuff across from the Craft Alive that offers reasonable prices. The others have lost their conscience. So the imported stuff will always sell regardless of where you put them.

the VIP should have put a local Market in place when their were in office....all VIP doing these days is crying down every thing; but do sharing any ideas....look at the contrast; the NDP in power now going 4-years. however most of what this NEW VIP is harping about they more than enough years in office to fix or set in place( i am not for NDP or VIP, i just looking at the future of the virgin islands......this is why i will continue to say a third political party is needed........talk that(as a matter of fact this will not get printed; because i am not worshiping the VIP)....leadership matters

These people have every right to complain because business is business and its know that persons/customers going to the market are welcomed by what they see first. something times may never get to the cage that they have the locals in. everyone should have been in that cage up pen. dont separate because those under the get is a a more vantage advertising point. you have to go searching to find those on the inside NOT FAIR, NO NO NO NOT FAIR

The little bit of farmers in the b.v.I can't feed this country so food have to come in and it is not economical to build 2 market place so they all have to be one place but the can be identify as local and imported.

Most people shopping at the market know exactly where the stuff is from. We have no problem buying food from Dominica and St Vincent because we know it's far superior to the $h1t that comes in on the barges from MIAMI. All food grown organically anywhere in the Caribbean is good for our health.

Drains being put in place where water don't settle or eat away the roads, all now none of the governments see the need for a Junior High School, seniors still on the back burner and with all the money spending our market could not have been more state of the art or JUST A LITTLE better? Nah because One Mart ah the real market....can't take away the spotlight now!
