R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Hon. Walwyn calls for improved behaviour in HOA.
Citing complaints made by several persons following the previous sitting of the House of Assembly (HOA), Hon. Walwyn said a number of persons came up to him and expressed their displeasure with the decorum displayed in the House.
"I've not heard that before from so many different persons, even at funerals people were saying that to me," Hon. Walwyn related during the third sitting of the third session of the second HOA on December 20, 2013.
Members of the public listening
The Education Minister further noted that members of the public were listening as Representatives made their points in the HOA and cautioned his colleagues that they were all there to promote a common cause.
"We are working for the same thing [and] that is to improve the quality of life for our people," Hon. Walwyn said, "But while we bring our points across in the House, we try to do so with a bit more respect and remember that the public is listening to us."
He added that these were the persons that had sent the Members of the House to represent them, ".and we ought to always make sure that we represent them and we represent them well."
House has become a circus
Former Legislator Eileene L. Parsons, OBE shared similar sentiments on the NDP radio programme a few months ago stating that the House had become a circus and had lost its sense of decorum.
"To me the House of Assembly has become a circus," Mrs Parsons bluntly stated on October 15, 2013.
"[The] behaviour is deplorable for those listening on the outside," Mrs Parsons noted while adding that it seemed to some that questions were not being asked in the House for information, but rather for "getting under one's skin".
Talk Show host Mr Donald E. de Castro had also added his voice to the debate with just a single word, noting a the time that the House was simply 'disgraceful'.
Ironically, Hon. Walwyn is one of the Members who has constantly been engaged in tradeoffs with Members of the Opposition while in the HOA.
