‘Put away the guns’ & come to the festival village- Hon Rymer
‘Put away the guns’- Hon Rymer
Giving brief remarks at the opening of Rena's Festiville for the 70th Emancipation Festival in the [British] Virgin Islands on July 29, 2024, Hon Rymer thanked all involved in organising the festival and urged the Virgin Islands to let peace and joy reign during the remainder of the festival.
His call follows the death of local Jareem A. Todman, who was gunned down while in his car in the vicinity of Road Town Market Square on Sunday, July 28, 2024.
“As we celebrate we ask that whatever issue you have with somebody else, use a different means of trying to settle that argument and put away [the] guns. Put money in your pocket, come to the village and let us celebrate…
“Let’s be safe, put away the guns, enjoy ourselves, come and party and have a good time” Hon Rymer stated.
Sacrifices for freedom
Using a portion of Psalm 23, Leader of the Opposition Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) suggested that emancipation festivals should hold great significance since great sacrifices had to be made for freedom from slavery.
According to the Opposition Leader, our forefathers travelled through the “valley of the shadow of death so that we can be here tonight,..and many did not make it,” Hon Skelton stated at the festival village in honour of Jost van Dyke resident Larina L. Jacobs-Lamothe on July 29, 2024.
“So here we are again tonight, one hundred and ninety years after the emancipation of our forefathers, we are here celebrating together, both residents and visitors alike.”
Hon Skelton then offered condolences to the family of Mr Todman and noted that he knew the family well as he worked with Todman’s father Austin, as well as an uncle, at the BVI Electricity Corporation.
“When things like this happen it gets all of us thinking what is happening to us as a people and especially as young people,” he remarked.
Torchlight Procession
Among those in attendance at the festival village opening were Acting Premier and Minister for Financial Services, Labour and Trade Hon Lorna G. Smith OBE; Junior Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Dr the Hon Karl Dawson (R1); Junior Minister for Culture and Tourism Hon Luce D. Hodge-Smith (R4), who was the MC; Director of Tourism Clive L McCoy, Events Manager Dirk L. Walters, and Festival Honouree Larina L. Jacobs Lamothe aka ‘Rena’.
Before the festival village opening, there was the traditional Torchlight Procession, which was well supported.
Meanwhile, the entertainment continues at Rena's Festiville tonight, with international Soca icon Machel Montano being the headliner.

why do you think most shootings happens are those places? thats where those kinda of people gather.
same people in office attire look professional, same people them that was a ms bvi contestant. check them out their dress half naked, throwing their booty wind up in the air and up under some very questionable men with chains, pants below waist and puffing weed.
thats the type of people these events attract so you dont gotta worry about them not showing up lol they will be there with or without gun just look for chains, pants below them waist, hairstyle, scooters, kia soul, weed etc
along with the half naked women and teenage girls that are dressed like a hooker idk how some of you parents got you daughters leaving the house like that and they are around drunk street men/boyz who will bang a tree if it could walk smh, rum, music about violence, guns, drugs, and sex promoted at these evets so obviously those of low morals and low standards will mostly be at these events.
I'm not saying everyone at these events are not of good standards but most.
and again how can you parents have your kids going to these adult shows where people are grinding on each other and half their body exposed then you wonder why the youths are into a certain lifestyle. you wonder why the females are only into certain men who lives this low standard lifestyle.
then they wonder why std so rampant through the place.
parents make sure you are checking you kids in that highschool. Do the std test do not think your child is an angel and cannot be influenced. you will be see surprised how many of those youths are spreading it around and when they see symptoms they are afraid to tell mommy or daddy so its keeps spreading. Parents watch your kids status who have someone follow them and see you child throwing up middle finger and listening to dancehall about sex, guns, violence, and drugs, Parents pay more mind to your child do not let this culutre sweep away your youths
Save the youths and you will save the future of this country

THAT HATING/HATER PHRASE IS PLAYED OUT AND A LAME RESPONSE WHEN PEOPLE SPEAK UP!!
Hell naw.
Dummy weapons are already banned. But seriously your comment about banning all blades past 1 inch is ridiculous. You want us to get arrested for a knife or machete while doing no harm. Are you going to be there to help when a dog rushes or a psychopath rapist strikes in a remote area? no. If you have ever been chased by dogs you will never be out in the wild without protection.
while weapons including pepper spray are banned many women & men carry some form of weapon it is common sense. police understand they can not be everywhere.
This is not Britain we have near zero knife crime dont place that curse on us by being strict. Those venues already have security. Clubs and such can have security.
