ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) has called for a gun-free remainder of the 70th Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival.

‘Put away the guns’- Hon Rymer

Giving brief remarks at the opening of Rena's Festiville for the 70th Emancipation Festival in the [British] Virgin Islands on July 29, 2024, Hon Rymer thanked all involved in organising the festival and urged the Virgin Islands to let peace and joy reign during the remainder of the festival.

His call follows the death of local Jareem A. Todman, who was gunned down while in his car in the vicinity of Road Town Market Square on Sunday, July 28, 2024.

“As we celebrate we ask that whatever issue you have with somebody else, use a different means of trying to settle that argument and put away [the] guns. Put money in your pocket, come to the village and let us celebrate…

“Let’s be safe, put away the guns, enjoy ourselves, come and party and have a good time” Hon Rymer stated.

Sacrifices for freedom

Using a portion of Psalm 23, Leader of the Opposition Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) suggested that emancipation festivals should hold great significance since great sacrifices had to be made for freedom from slavery.

According to the Opposition Leader, our forefathers travelled through the “valley of the shadow of death so that we can be here tonight,..and many did not make it,” Hon Skelton stated at the festival village in honour of Jost van Dyke resident Larina L. Jacobs-Lamothe on July 29, 2024.

“So here we are again tonight, one hundred and ninety years after the emancipation of our forefathers, we are here celebrating together, both residents and visitors alike.”

Hon Skelton then offered condolences to the family of Mr Todman and noted that he knew the family well as he worked with Todman’s father Austin, as well as an uncle, at the BVI Electricity Corporation.

“When things like this happen it gets all of us thinking what is happening to us as a people and especially as young people,” he remarked.

Torchlight Procession

Among those in attendance at the festival village opening were Acting Premier and Minister for Financial Services, Labour and Trade Hon Lorna G. Smith OBE; Junior Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Dr the Hon Karl Dawson (R1); Junior Minister for Culture and Tourism Hon Luce D. Hodge-Smith (R4), who was the MC; Director of Tourism Clive L McCoy, Events Manager Dirk L. Walters, and Festival Honouree Larina L. Jacobs Lamothe aka ‘Rena’.

Before the festival village opening, there was the traditional Torchlight Procession, which was well supported.

Meanwhile, the entertainment continues at Rena's Festiville tonight, with international Soca icon Machel Montano being the headliner.

What do you think would happen when you all sell out your own for power, wealth, fane and youth. If only people realise that people are not supposed to die young. The devil wants souls and people want to be millionaires and that's why you don't trust people who are rich or owns big companies making money. As soon as they blow up people close to them start dying. Trust no one because greed is a deadly thing now. Greed and sacrifices is bringing down this young generation. Festival should be cancelled. Tbd money should go to the less fortunate and suffiing. How many people are in hospitals or seeking help from the government and can't,but they can use your tax money to fly themselves and mistress all over. Just because some of you all get checks for votes or kiss a.. but the Father sees and knows everything. Judgement must come. Wait till the lower Freemasons realized they took the mark of the beast what are you all going to do about that. The politicians that told their families to get the covid death shot she be killed also if they didn't take it

Everything you have to show id Wow.

The same people that carry guns are the same people showing up to festival and jueve, bars, clubs,

why do you think most shootings happens are those places? thats where those kinda of people gather.

same people in office attire look professional, same people them that was a ms bvi contestant. check them out their dress half naked, throwing their booty wind up in the air and up under some very questionable men with chains, pants below waist and puffing weed.

thats the type of people these events attract so you dont gotta worry about them not showing up lol they will be there with or without gun just look for chains, pants below them waist, hairstyle, scooters, kia soul, weed etc

along with the half naked women and teenage girls that are dressed like a hooker idk how some of you parents got you daughters leaving the house like that and they are around drunk street men/boyz who will bang a tree if it could walk smh, rum, music about violence, guns, drugs, and sex promoted at these evets so obviously those of low morals and low standards will mostly be at these events.

I'm not saying everyone at these events are not of good standards but most.

and again how can you parents have your kids going to these adult shows where people are grinding on each other and half their body exposed then you wonder why the youths are into a certain lifestyle. you wonder why the females are only into certain men who lives this low standard lifestyle.

then they wonder why std so rampant through the place.

parents make sure you are checking you kids in that highschool. Do the std test do not think your child is an angel and cannot be influenced. you will be see surprised how many of those youths are spreading it around and when they see symptoms they are afraid to tell mommy or daddy so its keeps spreading. Parents watch your kids status who have someone follow them and see you child throwing up middle finger and listening to dancehall about sex, guns, violence, and drugs, Parents pay more mind to your child do not let this culutre sweep away your youths

Save the youths and you will save the future of this country

They double-minded …that’s no different than a fake “Minister of the Gospel” pushing for a certain local artist who dances scandalously on stage singing raunchy lyrics and half dressed to be welcomed home in grand style.

      Can’t serve two masters.

Please, everyone. Allow this festival to be as our Ancestors wanted it to be. Peaceful, loving, and having our FREEDOM from SLAVERY. Stop harming each other and let's move forward to protect our present generations giving them hope and pride, the way it should be, so they too can leave a legacy for the next generations to follow. AMEN.

The influence of doing illegal things are too promoted everyday. The BVI Top Rappers living the of illegal trade. It’s encouraging in every song. Our Top clothing brands are all criminally funded and only promoting snow and guns. Out Top radio station everyday is screaming free “Killa”. Drug and violence will always be promoted by the influencers.

The BVI ppl got to love this mess (not saying they actually do but they do nothing about the obvious corruption). At this point, we should truly understand that you truly cannot serve two masters. All that are promoting degrading and disrespectful things are all apart of the problem, those that remain silent are apart of the problem, but guess what, NOTHING and I will repeat, nothing will change

The Torchlight Procession is not someone's fantasy idea of having fun its actually rooted in the culture of the Virgin Islands. Before the 1950s there was no electricity in the Virgin Islands. Persons traveling at night especially during the dark moon would usually travel with a lantern or flambeau. The spectacle was created when a crowd would gather at night for whatever reason each with their light to navigate their way in the darkness. This is probably the most genuine part of the Emancipation Celebration that has survived over the decades as well as a few local dishes and drinks e.g. maubi whelks conchs etc. I would like to utter Kye's sentiments by saying " put away your machine and walk with your queen." Condolences to the bereaved families and shame on the scoundrel that had no qualms about spoiling the joy of a country.

Attending the festivities has become a very expensive venture. $40-$60 to get in on certain nights. $40 for a plate of Whelks. This so called celebration of our freedom is becoming costly. We have so lost our way as a people. The whole thing is a farce, a mockery. Festival is now big business.

@ so call emancipation while im not a fan but sea food is expensive a pound of whelks is about 20 dollars, you still have to clean them, prep them then when you put in the dish its about a pound other food to complete the dish and everything else to make the dish what it is. So i dont see a problem charging 35 or 40 for that type of dish

    @Ban all Weapons.

Dummy weapons are already banned. But seriously your comment about banning all blades past 1 inch is ridiculous. You want us to get arrested for a knife or machete while doing no harm. Are you going to be there to help when a dog rushes or a psychopath rapist strikes in a remote area? no. If you have ever been chased by dogs you will never be out in the wild without protection.

while weapons including pepper spray are banned many women & men carry some form of weapon it is common sense. police understand they can not be everywhere.

This is not Britain we have near zero knife crime dont place that curse on us by being strict. Those venues already have security. Clubs and such can have security.

This is one of the most expensive BVI Festival in the history of the these Virgin Island. I could not imagine that our 70th Anniversary Celebration would be so trashy but yet expressive. The individuals that are a part of this Committee, you know who are. What a hot mess you all have made and expect the public to support over priced tickets and a trashy Coney Island ?? HOW could you guys sleep at night robbing people like criminals?? I know most of you travel and would never put your kids in any trashy theme parks, so please stop because you are making the BVI look REALLY BAD.
