BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- With many persons not pleased with the usual late start of the August Monday Parade for Emancipation Festival, there is debate as to whether the Rise and Shine Tramp should be moved to another day or the August Monday Parade be shifted to a Saturday.

This was disclosed by the Events Manager of the BVI Tourist Board (BVITB), Mr Dirk L. Walters, while a guest on Talking Points on ZBVI 780 Am on Monday, September 23, 2024.

According to co-host Violet Thomas-Gaul, "it was mentioned" that the Rise and Shine has a bearing on the August Monday Parade, including its starting late.

“The debate is this…some persons were proposing to move Rise and Shine, some persons were proposing to move the Parade, and the thing is traditionally, culturally, going way back it started with Rise and Shine, so they don’t necessarily want to move the Rise and Shine,” Mr Walters responded.

August Saturday Parade?

He said; however, the talk is now about moving the parade.

“So now the mentally is considering moving the Parade. What day do you move the Parade to now? So now there is a proposal to move the Parade to the Saturday.”

Mr Walters added that among the arguments is there would be a larger influx of people to the territory for the Saturday Parade because while August Monday is a holiday for the VI it is not in some other countries and territories.

Mr Walters said he understands both sides of the argument and that any changes would not be up to him. He also said going against tradition can be an issue for some people as he recalled there was much uproar when the Miss BVI Pageant was moved up to an earlier date.

According to the BVITB Events Manager, there should be a public discourse about any proposed changes.

Did he forget that Seventh-Day Adventist church day is on Saturday? He wouldn't date put it on Sunday. Where was his common sense before he came up with this idea? It will be met with backlash before it gets to the voting stage. Do better, think outside the box Monday through Friday. Or he could just leave it on Monday because he doesn't need a large influx of people from other places. We have enough people for that morning.

may I ask which church of the Seventh day Adventist is in town at this time. last time i check that church is still not finish yet.

which on Sunday you have so many different church in town that will be open at that time.

don't get me wrong I have nothing against Saturday worship but lets be real...

Think into the future when the Road Town SDA church at the foot of Joes Hill is finishing building, what effect it will have on the worshippers. Also, did you think about the Saturday funerals and what impact it may have on the services. Lets not forget carrying the bodies to the Sea Cows Bay cemetery for burial. This is not a temporary thing he is talking about, he is suggesting to move it permanently.

Please do something as jouvert on the same morning as the parade, has proven time and time again to be the main reason for a late start of the parade. Insanity…doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result!

This is why expats who come to live among us say we have no culture. Where else can we find traditional celebrations being changed and uprooted to accommodate others? Where? I dare anyone to tell me where else this happens. The two largest carnivals in the Caribbean, Trinidad and Curacao, would never consider changing the time of their celebrations. They make it better so people take time to come and celebrate with them, but we have people discussing changes like we are holding a music fest.

maybe have the tramp on Tuesday or Wednesday to conclude the holiday events. Leave the parade where it is but make it more of a cultural event. Leave the vulgarities for the rise and shine.

Best suggestion thus far. I agree with this 110 percent. Leave Parade at Monday, Rise & Shine to Tuesday (day after parade) that way the Parade will have the participants at their best, Fresh and Ready and not tired and sleepy.

Move the Rise and Shine to Tuesday.

The real issue is with the participants. If they do not show up for the starting time, then the parade will not start on time. Most troupe especially the large one that usually bring up the rear of the parade participants are rarely on time. This is visible even when the parade has started to see some members heading, to the starting area. When asked why so late, they reply, "we're resting from liming all weekend". Sometimes it not the rise and shine but they out all weekend starting from Friday and need time to rest for their parade performance.

Rise and Shine and Parade are both disgrace they express a total lack of morality and absolutely no clue about our African Heritage. Gyrating half naked in the streets does not portray anything about our history or culture we are just showing the fact that we are empty vessels.

It is simple. Just set a realistic time for the start of the parade and have monitors to move the parade along.
Parade can start at 1 or 2 O'clock. It's just a handful of troops. Get it organized

Let him go change it and see the backlash he is going to receive. He is not going to &^%$ up the emancipation for any rise and shine for some damn porn show. As it is, they already put the local artist on the back burner for outside artists during carnival time with the gangster BS.

Why so many oppose to Jouvert Sunday morning, it will still start at 4 am and end by 8 am. So for the fake Christians who want to frolic they will still have time for church by 11 am.

Respect religion..Saturday and Sunday is out. Those are worshiping days. Then again we want to tramp from 5am to 10 or 11am.. Tramping in darkness is out of style, dangerous, no more night, 4am is too dark.. We can Tramp . Both things can happen on Monday.. It's all about the descipline of the people, most the people in the parade don't Tramp..Put rules and contracts in place...Bands that doesn't start on time will not be paid in full. Troupes that is not at the start point 15 minutes before start time with more than 75% of their registered number lose points.. Got to get that descipline back. Stop blaming the Tramp..

How about we start rise and shine 3am to 7am and start it from delta gas station, and start parade for 2pm to 7pm.

make a rule that once a troupe is late they will not come up the road and who ever is they the show must go on.

make a fine for the troupe member $250.00 if you make your troupe get kick out stand on business and they wouldn't be late.

Just like many others, I believe the parade being held on August Monday is perfectly fine. However, what needs to be addressed is the scheduling of Jouvert. It is quite frustrating for spectators to be given a start time of 1 PM for the parade, only to end up waiting for 2-3 hours before it actually begins. Our festival is primarily for us to celebrate and enjoy. While we welcome others to join, it’s important to retain the essence and originality of our traditions. Reschedule Jouvert to Tuesday and all other water sports activities. This will ensure no overlap or delays affecting the parade. So why move our parade to Saturday - No, I do believe it will bring a larger influx of people to the territory? Many other countries celebrate their carnivals/festivals during the week, and people utilize vacation leave to attend. If horse racing is being reintroduced, it can start at 2 PM on Tuesday, aligning seamlessly like it did in the past when there was Jouvert on Tuesday.

People in the different troupes and floats need manage their time, simple! If anything move jouvert to August Tuesday. We not sure when horse race will be back on track and we don't even have the watersports anymore. #ijs

Move the jouvert to Tuesday and evening when horse race comes back those same people will go sleeping to the track. We keep entertaining the "they will wait' behaviour and so they will continue - so yes, no jouvert on August Monday take it forward to August Tuesday and leave it right there; go horse race when aryo wake up
