Prominent VI lawyer’s son gets 10 years in jail for rape
Fay, 23, who attended New England prep schools, was convicted on February 2, 2018 of having sex with a 20-year-old college student in 2016 while she was incapable of consent and forcing oral sex on the victim.
According to New York Daily News, prosecutors asked for 15 years behind bars, arguing he forced himself on the woman who was asleep in the apartment where he was spending the summer after a night of drinking.
"George Fay preyed upon the vulnerability of a sleeping woman who thought she was safe inside an apartment with a friend," Manhattan DA Cy Vance Jr said in a statement. "Instead, she awoke to find she was being raped by a complete stranger."
At trial, Assistant District Attorney Sara Sullivan argued the predator searched Backpage.com for an escort but did not hire one. Failing that, she said Tuesday, he went for the victim.
More than 40 supporters wrote presentencing letters on behalf of Fay, attesting to his good character. Fay's father, Michael, is a prominent attorney in the Caribbean.
Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Melissa Jackson said Fay deserved the decade in prison because of the harm he did to the victim in the case. He faced up to 25 years behind bars.
