BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI - “I met with Rotary Club of Tortola on two different occasions and we are trying to identify a spot to have something like YEP centre because we realised the problem within our district: unemployment and young men sitting on the block.”

This is according to Sixth District Representative Honourable Alvera Maduro-Caines who was addressing residents of her district during the Recovery and Development Plan public consultation meeting on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies in Baughers Bay.

The Youth Empowerment Project (YEP), spearheaded by Stacy ‘Buddha’ Mather is a community project that provides after school programmes for children in the community.

Hon Maduro-Caines explained that she wants to have a centre like that where the youth can go and learn, adding that she hopes to get that done this year.

“I encourage elders to speak to the young ones”

Meanwhile, the second term legislator encouraged the elderly to speak to the youth, especially focusing on the ones they feel are heading down the wrong path, while recalling that a young man told her that the elderly “lock down and are afraid” to speak to them.

She explained, “I encourage the elders to speak to the young ones and try to help them. I spoke to a young man the other day and he said, ‘the one thing that I don’t like is the elderly look down on us as if they are afraid to talk to us but he said 'sometimes we just need somebody to listen to them or even to speak to them and to help them from not going into the direction that they are going in.'”

Hon Maduro-Caines also told residents that she has housed at least thirteen young men at her home, mentioning that they would come and go and one of the young men thanked her and her husband for allowing them to stay with her because if it wasn’t for her they would be in jail. “It made me cry.”

In addition, she disclosed that she and her husband paid for five of them to go back to night school and three of them made it to the end.

She said, “We need to take care of our youths and especially the ones that seem to be going astray. We could help them. That’s what I want to see, not only for my district but for the entire territory.”

I did not hear any political agenda on Maduro-Caines part. She was doing for the youths long before she was involved in politics. Something most of you negative bloggers seem to forget.

Go senator! Get all the info in terms of the organisational structure, funding, operations process, and curriculum. Use the Wheatley's building that used to be Island Department Store until land for a permanent location close to Alexandrina Maduro Primary School. I agree with your partnership with Rotary and solicit toastmasters as well. Funding should be sought from well meaning deep pockets who are truly concerned about the young generations future. For other fundraising, do payroll annual or monthly deductions with a theme a , an annual event family fun day with barbecue, raffle, display of projects done, races and competition. Another could be an annual market day on a saturday.
