ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) is scheduled to travel to the United Kingdom (UK) next week when he will, among other things, seek to get the reserved Order in Council to suspend the Virgin Islands Constitution removed.

The Order in Council was put in place by the UK in 2022 to force the Virgin Islands to implement reforms as recommended in the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) Report.

At a joint press conference on Friday, August 30, 2024, both Governor Daniel Pruce and Premier Wheatley disclosed they will be going to the UK to meet Minister Stephen J. Doughty, the Minister of Overseas Territories, on the week of September 9 and are scheduled to meet the Minister on September 11.

“At that meeting, I will be seeking to get clarity on the review process and timeline and getting the Constitution Suspension Order lifted.

Order ‘a colonial coercive tool’- Premier

“From the very beginning, we asserted that the Order in Council was a colonial coercive tool that had no place in a modern partnership. We have the opportunity with a new UK government and a new direction, to start a new era of partnership based on mutual respect and democratic values on our road to building a sustainable nation.”

Dr Wheatley said he will also be conveying his government’s commitment to ongoing governance reform and the modern partnership the VI wishes to build with the United Kingdon.

The Premier reminded that the UK has an obligation under UN convention to provide support for non-self-governing territories to get on the road to full self-government.

“We are committed to this journey and continue to build our governance strength. We welcome the UK as a partner in this regard,” Premier Wheatley said.

It seems many and I that you, Premier, don't want to accept that the UK is the Senior head of UK/BVI partnership, not us.
Each and of our political leaders before they can be accepted as our representative must pledge allegiance to UK's Authority, was Queen, now King Charles.
You know the rules of the political game. Why now pretend that you don't?.
However what the UK accepted, we have to abide with.

question: could you tame a scorpion to stop stinging? Can we tame our local politicians from mismanaging our finances.
Don't forget, the stronger rules over the weaker.
Maybe that why we can't get you all to stop misrepresenting our business honest.

Have a safe travel, the Governor and you.

God is Love and Love is God.

&Senior, hush your r@$%. Didn’t Governor Daniel Pruce just say that self-determination is up to the BVI people?? You are casting the situation as a Master-Slave relationship, while the UK is looking at the situation as a family and modern partnership..let’s stop the damn Neville Chamberlain type appeasement; it is sickening.

Strange the Premier want to use the UN as a backup on this matter but not on the fact that many are rendered stateless because of the BVI immigration policies. Hypocrisy on his part.

@ UN Hypocrisy . ..How are persons in the Virgin Islands rendered stateless based on bvi immigration policies? I would like to know. Seems like you have a dull axe to grind. If you are a foreigner you have options on where you want to work and live.

People check for your self after the COI we had a march and said all kind of things about the UK then a head of the country and some other went to beg pardon and we up to now did not get the results of that meeting and we had to do what was recommended and up to now all have not met so he think he can tell them to lift order and a former government minister may get jail time no way for lots of then in the government did had their share of saying about the UK they will not let you get away just yet it will be them taking over for a few years to show who is Boss.
  • Is dat so? (02/09/2024, 13:24) Like (6) Dislike (0) Reply
A colonial coercive tool you say? Of course you would because its intent is to make the BVIs govern itself democratically in an open and transparent manner acting in the interests of the electorate instead of decades of continued cronyism, corruption and profligate spending of the public purse often for direct benefit to politicians while allowing the infrastructure to crumble. I also thought the licks from my father were coercive at the time, but I learned to stop doing things that merited licks. Alas, the current govt. play book seems to continue to be that good governance, honesty, and integrity are for the little people, mostly from other places.

Either we challenge the Order in Council as to its legality otherwise it's a waste of time and you don't need to make a trip to find that out.
