BIRAS CREEK, Virgin Gorda, VI- While many criticize the administration of Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) for a lack of development in the Territory, one development has received high praise.

During the Budget Debate last week, December 18 and 19, 2024, Premier Wheatley said he had the opportunity to visit the Biras Creek Project and was “very impressed and encouraged the owners to push forward with the project”.  He noted that these projects contribute much to the economy and our development.

The project also came in for high praise from Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE (AL) in her Budget Debate contribution.  She noted that it’s a “very good project, just what the Virgin Islands need”.

Hon Smith as well, expressed frustration at the red tape and bureaucracy that developers like Biras Creek go through, especially as it relates to Non-Belonger Land Holding Licenses.

The Project

In 2022 work started on the new marina- that has a 300ft dock with a 25ft draft designed for large sailing yachts. According to a Biras Creek spokesman the Marina was built by local Virgin Gorda contractors.

In April 2024 Biras Creek opened the exclusive Ikigai Restaurant in the footprint of the old Biras Arawak Room. The same spokesperson responding to our emailed question noted that the aim is to “put the VI on the map with the best food in the Caribbean, sourced from local fishermen and our own organic farm”.

The long-term plans for Biras Creek, located on the North of Virgin Gorda, include the completion of the Marina by April 2025.  Plans also include a new restaurant & lounge, a Boutique with provisioning for large yachts, water sports, and a bakery.

Currently, Biras Creek employs 22 full-time employees and will be shortly increasing its staff to 30 with the opening of the marina according to the information provided.

Phase one of the development will include 9 luxury villas that will form part of the Biras Rental pool. The road contract has been given to a local Virgin Gorda contractor and they aim for the villas to be completed by 2027 just in time for availability for the 2027 season. This will also bring an additional 20 jobs to the Virgin Islands.
