Premier Wheatley is not solely focused on delivering CoI reforms- Kedrick E. Malone
Mr Malone was a guest on Talking Points on Monday, July 22, 2024, when he was asked if he agreed with comments made by Opposition members, along with some members of the public, that Premier Wheatley has paid little attention to key matters of the Virgin Islands, including the economy, because most of his attention is on delivering the CoI reforms before the deadline.
CoI demands attention
“I wouldn’t say that the Premier isn’t focused on other business,” Mr Malone defended, “The CoI by its nature demands regular attention”.
The Governance Reform Delivery Manager said Governor Daniel Pruce and Premier Wheatley meet every Tuesday, along with their team and that matters are going to Cabinet regularly that the Premier has to shepherd through, along with matters going to the House of Assembly. He said these are “quite demanding”.
He added that there are a lot of weighty and substantive issues that cannot be allowed to go by lightly and so time must be taken to get it right.
“I think from my perspective…I see the Premier doing both the CoI work and the other ongoing work of running the government,” Mr Malone said.
Constitution most important aspect of governance
Without the CoI, he continued, there would be more time to focus on the other issues; however, he is not of the view that they are being “neglected”.
Mr Malone stood his ground saying the CoI is “an issue that has to be dealt with” as the Constitution is the “most important aspect of the governance”.
August 31, 2024, is the mutually agreed deadline for the implementation of reforms coming out of the CoI.
