ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has congratulated the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK), Keir R. Starmer, on his victory at the polls.

Starmer's Labour Party ousted Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party in a landslide.

In a post on the Government of the Virgin Islands Facebook page on July 5, 2024, Premier Wheatley is shown in a photo with Mr Starmer.

'Congratulations to Sir Keir Starmer, Primer Minister of the United Kingdom, and the Labour Party in the 2024 General Elections' are written on the frame of the photo.

Opportunity for improved relationship with UK?

Special Envoy of the Premier, E. Benito Wheatley, who is Premier Wheatley’s brother, stated in a published commentary on Friday, July 5, 2024, that the Labour Party's landslide victory at the polls presents a fresh opportunity for the United Kingdom (UK) to establish a genuine modern partnership with the Overseas Territories (OTs) after 14 years of Conservative Party rule in which the relationship with the Territories was severely strained by heavy-handed UK Government policies and actions that smacked of colonialism, particularly in the Caribbean where Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman, Montserrat and Turks and Caicos Islands.

Mr Wheatley said the gap left by the Conservatives leaves an opportunity for the new Labour Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Rt Hon Sir Keir R. Starmer and Foreign Secretary Rt Hon David Lammy to consider their own strategy toward the OTs, which could involve a much better balance in the UK-OT relationship if Labour genuinely wants to improve things.

He added that the new Labour Government must also not limit the scope of their engagement with the other OTs, particularly in the Caribbean, to company transparency, corporate taxation, security, and marine biodiversity.

“To do so would be to repeat the mistake of the Conservatives who narrowly focused on these issues and overlooked the islands as communities of real people living normal lives, who have their own daily challenges as well as aspirations for themselves and their societies,” Mr E. Benito Wheatley wrote.

Starmer is not stammering. He seem to be cut feom a different political cloth and his agenda is not business as usual. He said his actions will speak for him and its not all the talking. He made it clear that it will be policies before politics. Timw will tell but once he gets into Foreign and Commonwealth issues he is most likely not going to be inpressed with Nutella. Time will tell and so we continue to suffer

After badmouthing the UK'S policies in reference to better governance for the people of the BVI, hear now our Premier trying to flattered the Newly elected UK'S Prime Minister, Kier R. Starter, as if he forgot the that on our previous Governor, John Rankin's farewell date our Premier deliberately made himself absent, weak tactics indeed. This not to side with the UK on all of its policies in regards to how it has and is handling issues, of course not. However
the UK's new Prime Minister is no rocket scientist, but far from it he also is not a fool in regards to our blatant disregard to make adjustments to foster better governance for the people of the BVI. Delays and others questionable moves, éven moreso lately, has take priority over necessities for political and personal gains for the self proclaimed elites whose minds are bent on covetousness, in my opinion.

of course our party guy has probably already booked his flight to UK so he don't miss whatever big ceremony the Brits will have. I think the king done swear in the new prime minister but not sure if they do big inaugurations like us with red carpet. Slowwonder is not going to miss it. For someone who bawl so much about colonialism, he sure as heck can't keep out UK and always jetting there.

He got rid of the rawanda plan which Rishi Sunak was making out to be inevitable. Come what may. (son of a gun)

He said he's done with policies that dont act as a deterrent. Will he get rid of the smoke free UK idea & also legalize Cannabis? Its about time to reach an agreement. How can the champion stop fighting?
