FAT HOG'S BAY, Tortola, VI – Long before holding the highest office, Virgin Islands Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) added to the country’s musical repertoire with the release of a song ‘I wanna fly,' which touched on social issues in the Virgin Islands and remains relevant in 2024.

The song, which was played during this morning’s June 24, 2024, edition of ‘Da Morning Braff’ left listeners shocked to hear the now Premier Dr Wheatley singing and rapping about social issues.

“I want to fly, so high, in the sky, some days I want to run away, that’s what my mother says,” were the first lines after a short piano intro.

With a catchy chorus and lyrics meant to inspire, the song has more of a R&B/Hip-Hop crossover sound rather than the traditional sounds of the Caribbean like reggae, and soca or even the native fungi folk style sounds of the VI.

'Problems will follow you'- Premier

The Premier, speaking to Virgin Islands News Online (VINO), said the song was released back in 2010, however, on listening to the words and lyrics, they still remain relevant to today's generation of social issues and challenges.

The chorus further added, 'Problems will follow you, you have to find another way," regarding finding new ways to overcome challenges.

Host Floyd Burnett aka 'Heritage' regarded that song as a 'power song' and one that is part of a series of music poems for the freedom of the nation.

Other social issues covered in the song included poverty, nepotism, crime, politics and charting a new course for the Virgin Islands.

That man got on that show this morning and tried to omit versions on the horse track situation. When the Thomas family called in he got quiet and then talking about his time is limited. He got into politics and is nothing like what his lyrics convey.

The Braff this morning was a “Yes Man” show until Ms. Thomas called in with facts then they all got quiet

I thought "I wanna fly" was a prediction that he loved to fly first class and will always be on a jet plane going somewhere if he ever became Premier

    "I Wanna Fly"

Woke up this morning, gotta catch my flight,
First-class ticket, man, I’m living it right.
Got my Gucci suitcase, and my shades on tight,
I’m the Slowande, ready to take flight!

    Chorus:
I wanna fly, oh so high,
Government money, watch it fly by.
First class to Paris, Rome, and Dubai,
But what do I do? Oh, I just wanna fly!

Paris was lovely, didn’t do much there,
Had some croissants, and strolled through the square.
Checked out the Louvre, took a selfie or two,
Met with no one, but I liked the view!

I wanna fly, oh so high,
Taxpayer money, it’s no pie in the sky.
First class to Tokyo, Madrid, and Shanghai,
But what do I bring back? Oh, I just wanna fly!

    Bridge:
Lay flat seats and champagne on ice,
Flying so high, I’m living so nice.
Governance? Nah, I’ll do that later,
Right now I’m just a frequent flyer debater.

Rome had the Colosseum, it was quite the sight,
Took a gondola in Venice, what a fancy night!
Went to a meeting? Nope, didn’t find the time,
But hey, that tiramisu was oh so divine!

    Chorus:
I wanna fly, oh so high,
Public funds vanish with a wink of an eye.
First class to Sydney, Moscow, and Mumbai,
What did I achieve? Oh, I just wanna fly!

Back in the BVI, they’re asking for a plan,
They want results, but I’m just one man.
Spent all the budget on my globetrotting spree,
But hey, that’s politics, at least for me!

He spoke or should i say sang that into existence...fly o fly. Unfortunately, what happens to the rest of us? Btw, when did you plan to do the people's work with all the damn flights you taking? We should 'duct' your pay each time you fly and has nothing to show for it but air miles. I remembered having a conversation with you, an aspiring Politician. You talked about change, being impactful and taking the Virgin Islands beyond what we expected. Did we drop the ball by voting for you and listening to all the crap you were spewing over the last few years? Or Did you drop the ball by not aligning yourself by being a Politician of integrity, change or one that makes a positive difference in the lives of the entire VI populace? Sir, its not too late to make a change. We are a people of forgiveness. Please pivot and do what is right and just. Be the leader we hoped for and voted for. Can you look at yourself in the mirror without seeing the horrific state the VI is in? Can you look at yourself in the mirror and see a proud, honest and caring individual being reflected? Where's your empathy for your people who suffers from these problems; raw sewage in the streets, overgrown vegetation on the sides of the roads, lack of water in a lot of areas, the constant disconnection of electricity, the exorbitant fees charged for electricity, the sky high food prices, the increase of criminal activities, the stagnant economy, the lack of proper channels to deal with the oversight of the banking industry which chooses to rob us of our monies and dignity with their atrious fees and lack of intetest on our savings or investments.

I will leave that short list there for you and perhaps my fellow citizens can add theirs below and rate y'all. My grade for you is 30% and thats because today is kind to people day because it should be lower. How would you rate yourself?
