Premier urges private sector to protect safety of employees
"We are continuing to keep a close watch on Karen, which - after having weakened in the early part of last night - has upgraded back to Tropical Storm strength. We are closely monitoring the updates from the DDM as the weather system moves closer to the Territory, until it departs our vicinity, as I encourage you to also do," Premier Fahie said.
Employee Safety First
With both Public and Private Schools in addition to Public offices closed, the Premier said, "I trust that the private sector is doing its part to ensure the safety of its employees. As you know, I am a firm believer that the most important asset to a business is its people."
As of 11:00 AM, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) reported that the centre of Tropical Storm Karen was located near latitude 17.5 North, longitude 65.8 West or approximately 99 miles West south-west of the [British] Virgin Islands.
"Karen is moving toward the north near 8 mph, and this general motion is expected to continue today. A north-northeastward motion with some increase in forward speed is forecast tonight through Wednesday night," the department noted.
The Department stated that the closest point of approach of the eye utilising coordinates for Tortola will be about 65.9 miles to the west of the [British] Virgin Islands and warned of a number of impacts from this system.
"These potential impacts include; Winds gusting to tropical storm force, Possible rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches with isolated amounts 8 inches, possible flooding, mudslides and rock slides, increased High Surf conditions [and] seas as high as 10–12 feet with the potential for coastal flooding," the DDM said.
As with his previous updates, Premier Fahie underscored, "I continue to hold fast to the reality that the mercy of God surpasses everything on earth. I know that He will continue to bless and protect the people of the Virgin Islands."
