DUFF'S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI - Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has promised more jobs as well as more revenues under a new Gambling (Gaming and Betting) Control Act, 2020, currently being debated in the House of Assembly (HoA).

Speaking at the Ninth Sitting of the Second session of the Fourth House Of Assembly tonight June 16, 2020, he said over the years, the Territory has moved from a more agriculture-based economy to one that is of tourism then eventually into financial services.

Tourism & financial services facing challenges

"This is why today so many of our Virgin Islands (VI) people have hotels, guest houses, Air B&B and other kinds of rental accommodations," he said, noting that even more businesses arose out of the sector.

He said, however, that while the two sectors have served the VI well, he said recent events have prompted the administration to realise that complacency is not an option.

Premier Fahie noted that financial services is also being challenged due to moves in the international arena and tourism has seen a drop due to catastrophic events like Hurricanes, and more recently, the advent of COVID-19 is another major upset to the industry.

Diversifying the local economy

With the introduction of gambling legislation, the Premier said the hope is to have another revenue stream given that the Territory cannot depend on the United Kingdom (UK) for robust financial support when facing challenges.

Hon Fahie said, "a managed and regulated gaming and betting industry is also an opportunity to create jobs and to attract and earn revenue and that is the context in which this legislation is being brought here today," even as the Territory seeks other economic diversification options.

The motion for the Second and Third Readings of the Gambling (Gaming and Betting) Control Act, 2020, was seconded by Deputy Premier and Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) and is currently being debated in the House.

Legalize gambling I don’t know why the bvi behind this could’ve made us a tourism hotspot more. Hopefully when everything calms down

Why is there not a march or protest organized against hate for 'Island People' expatriates here in the BVI. This hatred and prejudice for our smaller island persons, needs to be addressed. The sad observation here is that we are almost all of the same ethnicity. 'Black' Something for BLM organizers here in the BVI to consider. Stop the hate against Island People. STHAIP.

Imagine someone living in the British Virgin 'Islands' with a nationality of "BVIslander" with the word 'Island' literally in both, calling other Caribbean people 'Island' people as an insult LOL. I get a good laugh everytime I see a it, I swear it sounds so silly. It's like somebody from Nigeria calling someone from Zimbabwe "African" as an insult. Lol Lol Lol

I see it the same way.
Everyone is “Island People”, unless you happen to come from a continent. And some of those are just big islands.
No matter where we come from, we’re all simply neighbors on this planet.

Is this just about domino gambling under the tamarind tree or is it more serious ? Get ready for the high rollers arriving in their private jets, dressed in silk suits, and private body guards. Local mafia must be drooling all the way to the bank.
New job opportunities for armoured car services will benefit and a few pretty South American girls offered jobs at the crap tables, otherwise only local fag end sweepers will get a piece of the action !

I always thought that a Casino at the Pier Park would have been nice as a social and economical house, Those cruise eship passengers wont have to rush baco to the cruise ship or stay on the cruise ship to game...I will suggesf just one casino gamiing house on the Pier Park...no more....We can consider putting a smaller one at the Airport using the restaurant space..Keep the the BVI with just those 2 casino gaming house...No more...One st pier park, one at the Airport...Thats it.....

We need gambling to bring in big revenue. The gambling should NOT be on any sister island where we live at all. It should be on one of our nearby islands that is not inhabited. This way jetties can take people back and forth at their leisure, without it disrupting our everyday lives. Casino's on any main inhabited island would be dangerous for us who live here and it would be too overcrowded. Make sure you have armed police for those that would think it would be an easy target. The only way for them to get away would be by boat, which can be apprehended quickly, away from us. It can work easily if you take the time to learn this from other casinos around the world. They run a tight ship with cameras everywhere, and you never here of them being robbed at gunpoint, because that would be suicide for the robbers.

@ Tv boy, you obviously have not traveled around much to visit casinos. As you walk through their doors, you are on camera. Every section is on camera. Just travel, and a entire world will open up to you. P.S. Leave your gun at home, or they will roughly escort you upstairs.

You bring gambling to the BVI, we will be there with our own private security. Less time to fly to the BVI than flying to Las Vegas.

Come up with other ideas to generate revenue.

Life is already a gamble. I’ll say let satan people do their things and God fearing people do their thing. We’re in a stage of life where more people would be for devil doings vs God doings however not being a lot of people are for the devil doing and it seems fun and cool doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do. In the BVI a lot of negative vibes are well endorsed and If your not involved you look soft and boring etc but that’s the whole idea. Keep your Godly grounds.

The entire history of legalized gambling in this country and abroad shows that it has brought nothing but poverty, crime, and corruption, demoralization of moral and ethical standards, and ultimately a lower living standard and misery for all the people. A gambler can become just as addicted to his bewitching pastime as the alcoholic does to his liquor or the drug addict to drugs.

Fantastic. Those little machines in backrooms are thieves they set to payout. How about a proper casino, tables, dealers, and dancers. Puerto Rico style but bettet. Now you're making Tortola a destination. An tropical Disneyland.
