ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has confirmed our News Centre’s first and accurate story that Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services, Labour and Trade Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE has been fired.

Premier Wheatley also confirmed that Third District Representative and Opposition Member Hon Julian Fraser, RA will join his administration and will be the new Deputy Premier and Minister for the Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change.

“In advance of this statement, I informed Territorial Representative Honourable Lorna Smith, OBE that she will no longer serve as Deputy Premier and Minister of Financial Services, Labour and Trade, nor hold any other Ministerial portfolio at this time.

“I did so with a heavy heart, because I enjoyed working with Hon. Smith, and she was a very capable Minister,” Premier Wheatley said in a statement this morning, October 23, 2024.

Hon Smith was set to cross the floor again?

Dr Wheatley, noted, however, that Hon Smith did not give him the “confidence” that she would remain with his administration for the duration of this term and “this left room for uncertainty, and political instability, which we cannot afford at this time.”

Hon Smith was elected as an At Large Representative of the National Democratic Party (NDP) at the April 2023 general elections but crossed the floor to help form the government with the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) which had won 6 of the 7 seats in the HoA.

The Premier went on to say that the incumbent government must ensure that the Order in Council is lifted, “we repair our infrastructure, deliver public services at a much higher level, grow our economy and continue to build a sustainable nation.”

Dr Wheatley thanked Hon Smith for her “hard work and dedication” as Deputy Premier.

Meanwhile, Dr Wheatley said he will now take up the portfolio of Minister for Financial Services, Labour and Trade.

The Premier added that he and his ministerial colleagues hope to maintain a positive working relationship with Hon Smith, in her capacity as Territorial Representative so that together they can improve the lives of the people of the Virgin Islands.

“I again want to reiterate that the political changes in the composition of the Government announced today, were made in the interest of political stability which is needed at this time to move the Territory forward.

“Finally, I thank my Ministers and Junior Ministers for their continued confidence in my leadership as Premier,” Dr Wheatley stated.

If the Deputy was indeed courted by the opposition with the promise of the Premiership, it seems her ambitions may have outpaced her judgment. In a political landscape where 4 opposition members harbor ambitions to be Premier, but 0 of the 4 have the altruism to put the country above their own desires, she may have found herself in the same pit of vipers that led her to cross the floor. This moment should also serve as a lesson in leadership for Premier Wheatley—loyalty is not to be taken for granted. Those who stand by you must be acknowledged and their loyalty reciprocated, for in politics, loyalty from an inconstant is a rare thing. If she was not loyal to the NDP, then it stands to reason she would not display that loyalty to you either.

What is admirable, however, is that she made no pretense. Her ambitions were clear, and she acted with transparency, which is to be commended. She clearly has her sights set on becoming Premier and will navigate the political terrain as necessary to achieve that goal. But let this be a reminder—true leadership is not just about ambition, but about knowing when to lead, when to wait, and how to recognize those who truly stand with you.

Your post is based on the premise that the premier is telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Call me cynical, but I somehow doubt that.

The only way Lorna would have become Premier was if Wheatly had experienced the same thing that happened to Fahie, and she had to step up. That is how Wheatly became Premier at first. After Wheatly, Fraser could probably get the seat he always wanted as Premier, MAYBE!

It’s NOT his government it’s the PEOPLE of the Virgin Islands government!!! The premier needs to realize he is serving for the people not himself. The power gone to his head now he’s starting with his autocratic leadership behavior and dismissing anyone who disagrees with him. He need to stop referring to the government as “his” cause we the people who put him there and we can take him right back out. WE HAVE THE POWER thank you Lorna for standing up to the voices of the people!

Fired because she was likely to cross the Floor. There was no definite indication. She did not give him 'the confidence' that she would remain with his administration for duration of this term and this left room for uncertainty, and political instability. Sowande in dictatorship fired Lorna without verbal or written notification of her decision. This action being approved by the Governor shows no respect for the country or it's people. Sowande your time is coming.

Plot twist. What if the Premier got played by his informant? Lorna wad not going to cross. She had all ministries and title she could ask for. Fraser on the other hand had a motive. Did he add some spice into the pot to confuse the chef? I think so.

I am not a fan of Hon. Smith. Far from. But I recognize the work she was doing and was going to continue to do. I do not believe it was a wise decision for the Premier to sack her. It is going to come back to haunt him in a major way. Right now, the Virgin Islands Party is walking on even thinner ice than before, and I would not at all be surprised if Hon. De Castro and Hon. Rhymer would bolt together and join to form another Government with the other side headed by Ronnie Skelton. I am not a fan of that either, but I would not be surprised if it happened. At this point, I think it would serve the Territory best if the Government is dissolved, and new elections are called.

The political savvy and even the non -political savvy ,and the blind could see this outcome materially evolving. The signals were everywhere, for they were plastered across the sky, across the seas, along the highways and byways , etc..The Hon Julian Fraser, D-3 and Leader of Progressive United, leaked this during the Opposition Press Conference a few days ago. Further, for the life of me, I could not understand why Dr. Hon Premier Natalio Wheatley, D-3, MoF, leader of Government business, etc., would be slowing bringing the Vote of No Conference to the floor? Now, the reason is as clear as mud. The player got played. The snake got crushed. Sometimes the snake in the grass injects its poisonous venom in its prey ; other times, it gets crushed

Is it possible that the Hon Lorna Smith was in negotiations with the opposition but the Premier strike before she could. According to the Premier , he lost confidence in the Hon Smith. The Hon Smith noted that she only got notified this morning in her office that she was being fired. The Premier’s decision making, judgement, etc have been on shaky ground, etc. However, on this firing, he was on point, for if he lost confidence in the Hon Smith, he had no choice but to part ways. . It was a tough decision but leaders are expected to make tough decisions. Leadership/politics is not for the weak of heart, etc. It is simple . The Premier strike before he was struck, bringing the government down. Karma is bitch they say.

Seems as if the relationship b/w the Hon Lorna Creque Smith and the Dr. Hon Premier Natalio Wheatley went clean off the rails. It seems so much so that the Premier held his decision close to beat, letting the Hin Smith know when it became a fait accompli. She was not it seems given the option to resign..Trust and loyalty matters but it must be earned.,In this SNAFU situation, trust, loyalty , confidence, etc, went south. What happened is going to be awkward, for the VI is a small bedroom community and they run into each other, ie, on the streets, in the HoA, etc..Has the bridge been irretrievably burnts or the gangplank just pulled up?

Any leader who is in charge of a political or economic institution and have lost confidence in an employee(s) and neither coaching nor counseling can effect change , rebuild a high level of confidence, etc. he/she must take action to protect the interest of the institution. Consequently, if Dr. Hon Natalio Wheatley who had lost confidence in the Hon Smith , he was obligated to act, given the high cost of inaction, hand wringing, etc. Inaction would have been signified the action of a weak kneed leader, poor leadership, gross negligence, etc.
