Premier promises regular visits to Virgin Gorda
Speaking on NDP Radio last evening March 5, 2012, Premier Smith noted that the last time the National Democratic Party (NDP) was in power it had set up a system where the Ministers of Government visited Virgin Gorda regularly. He added that this system will restart again after the budget process, which could either be this month or next month. “We will have regular visits. I myself will attend at least once a week and the other members of Government will also set up office there so Virgin Gorda will have the benefits of having discourse with the Ministers and getting their problem solved just as in Tortola.”
Earlier, a caller who claimed to be from the 9th District had expressed concern with representation since he said he was aware that the elected representative Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal has been ill and wanted to know if there needed to be a period of non-representation to pass for a new representative to be elected.
Premier Smith, however, said the people in the 9th District voted for the representative and that they had the confidence in his ability to represent them. He noted too that Hon. O’Neal attends the House of Assembly meetings.
Territorial At Large Representative Hon. Archibald Christian reminded the public that there are four Territorial Representatives that are available to deal with the problems and issues affecting the people of the 9th District.
“The Premier is going to make arrangements to meet with residents of Virgin Gorda sometime in the future as soon as we get through the budget problem. I am also available at anytime and have been receiving a number of calls from Virgin Gorda and we have been trying our best to deal with issues that have been presented to us. I want to assure the residents of Virgin Gorda and the 9th District that short of the fact that you may not be getting representation from the elected representative because of circumstances, you still have access to four other persons who can put your causes forward,” Hon. Christian stated.
