SCRUB ISLAND, VI- As part of the week-long National Celebration in honour of The Right Honourable Dame Janice M. Pereira, MBE, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) hosted a gala dinner in her honour at Scrub Island Resort on Friday, October 25, 2024.

The event was held under the theme, ‘A Night to Remember: Celebrating Dame Pereira’.

It was indeed a night to remember as many persons, particularly in the legal field, turned up to celebrate with the retired Chief Justice, who has since been appointed to the Privy Council.

Members of government as well as members of the Opposition also joined in the celebration.

‘The woman, the legend, in all her Virgin Islands splendour’

One of the memorable moments of the event was Premier Wheatley enjoying a dance with Dame Pereira.

According to the Office of the Premier, Dr Wheatley was proud to host the gala dinner as part of the week-long National Celebration in honour of The Right Honourable Dame Janice M. Pereira.

“Dame Pereira has made the entire Virgin Islands proud and this was an evening fitting to celebrate the woman, the legend, in all her Virgin Islands splendour!” the Office of the Premier stated on its Facebook page today, October 28, 2024.

The week-long celebrations themed, ‘Celebrating our Radiant Daughter: A Journey from the Virgin Islands to the Privy Council’, were also held to recognise Dame Pererira’s recent appointment to His Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council.

The celebrations ran from October 21 to 27, 2024, and featured fourteen (14) public and private events.

In 1981, Dame Janice Pereira became one of the first women called to the bar of the Virgin Islands. She later sat as a High Court Judge, received an appointment to the Court of Appeal and was then appointed as Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court in 2012. In May 2024, she retired as Chief Justice following a historic and transformative tenure.

She ought to be awarded an OBE for her loyal contribution to country for Social Justice.

She already has an award which far outranks an "OBE". Thats why she is referred to Dame Janice Pereira.

I keep saying that there are no friends or enemies in politics, only changing alliances. It doesn't matter, them people will laugh and knock glasses still.

I still don't know what she did to improve the Justice system, what her major contribution was, or what big cases she sat on as a judge or as a Lawyer during her career. I mean, other than sitting in the position. Some would say that the Judiciary competence and morale of the Eastern Supreme Court are at an all-time low.
