GREAT MOUNTAIN, Tortola, VI— Fifth District Representative Honourable Kye M. Rymer says restoration work at Great Mountain has revealed what may be a large fort or plantation, and experts are being asked to research the site’s history.

Speaking during the Fifth District Dialogues on Sunday, October 11, 2026, Hon Rymer said the project initially focused on restoring a natural spring that residents traditionally used to wash clothes and cars. During the work, the team discovered features that could point to an earlier historic use of the area, including what Rymer described as jail cells.

“We had some of the experts that came out, and they’ll be doing some research there,” Hon Rymer said. He added that the site “might have been a plantation,” but said more information would be shared after the findings are reviewed.

Possible tourist attraction

Hon Rymer, who is also the Minister for Communications and Works, said the discovery could eventually make Great Mountain a tourist attraction for the community. He cautioned, however, that the site’s history has not yet been confirmed.

Infrastructure work is also underway, including construction of a wall and roads. Rymer said the team also plans to clean the parking lot as work continues to improve access to the spring and surrounding area.

According to an earlier publication by our news centre, Hon Rymer indicated that plans are underway to transform the natural spring at Great Mountain into a new tourist attraction. He also added that the development is expected to improve opportunities for taxi drivers, who can take visitors to the site.

Family don’t need to give up any land. A public/private partnership can and should be established for the benefit ofnall

If you look closely when passing in the direction heading to Great Mt road, you will see a part of an "old wall" lining the ghut, just after the bridge, after Toddy place.

Behind that you can see parts of the old ruins, but it is heavily overgrown.

Further going up Great Mt Road, where the guys used to wash down once upon a time, after you pass another bridge. They have cleared an area which also has a old ruin further inside. Not sure which you were refering to.

In the 1970s I researched and made detailed drawings of scores of sites on Tortola dating from the plantation period, some of which are included in my book "Virgin Island Sketches"

There were historical sites across from the Lobster Farm, up on top the quarry and across from tadpole body Shop. All gone because of greed.

if all of our historical documents wasn't locked up in England this knowledge would be well known.

At the side of the road going to Pockwood is a fort and a dungeon. Just covered in vegetation, nowhere to park, no signs. In the one dungeon are old wall carvings from the inmates. Tourists would definitely visit these sites, buy a souvenir, a drink, maybe some food.
