ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A police officer has been charged for the alleged unauthorised disclosure of sensitive information that led to a planned police operation failing last year.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) in a press release this evening, January 8, 2025, announced the outcome of an internal investigation following a significant security breach that occurred during a planned operation in November 2024.

The breach, which the RVIPF said involved the unauthorised disclosure of sensitive information, compromised the success of the operation and raised serious concerns about the integrity of law enforcement protocols.

Comprehensive investigation

Upon learning of the incident, the RVIPF said it launched a comprehensive investigation led by a specialised team within the Force. It said the investigation underscored the gravity of the breach and the necessity for stringent accountability measures within the organisation.

As a result of the investigation, Police Constable Earlando Baynes was arrested and charged with Breach of Trust by a Public Officer.

The RVIPF said Baynes is scheduled to appear before the Magistrate's Court in the coming days.

'We are dedicated to eradicating corruption within our force'- Acting CoP Vanterpool

Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline E. Vanterpool stated, “The RVIPF remains steadfast in its commitment to uphold the highest standards of integrity and transparency. We are dedicated to eradicating corruption within our force and ensuring public trust in our law enforcement capabilities.”

The RVIPF assures the public that we will continue to take decisive action against any breaches of trust and will remain vigilant in safeguarding the integrity of the organisation and the safety of our community.

Lord jesus this is frightening not even5 years in the force i only hope they do back ground check on all serving police officers starting immediately

The force needs to get it's mojo back, too many police officers recruiting their friends and family, therefore proper checks and due diligence are not adhere to. Background checks in the person host country must be conducted and a interpol check as well to ensure the virgin Islands received the best person who can handle confidential information and served the population.
LASTLY the police force need to suspend local training and resume training in Barbados, because I don't think the local training is robust enough in the circumstances. Forget about cost and focus on quality.

Be non local and aim to make as much money as possible and get benefits in a foreign land fast tracked, or be local and need a job bad. Both types are prime candidates for temptations.

The rhetoric to keep locals from applying is that it would cause biases and corruption. Look how many non local officers in the force versus the amount of locals and count which ones are doing most of the offending or have allegations pressing against them. They advocating for non local hires, but take a look at the records... stuff of tall tales. If they do have a hiring process, it must be a front or a running joke. Look at the stats: In quick succession, people either leaving the force of their own free will, or they are being disgraceful removed. Who vetting these people? Who is responsible for this consistent muck? No bill should pass from you guys until we see a presence of stability and integrity. Reel and come good!

I disagree with your assumptions. I do not think locals apply to be police officers. I am.positive if qualified locals apply they would be successful.

Some of them local they hiring just the same. They mixed up, messed up and tainted out the box! BTW the term local doesn't mean nationally born, just people who been here for some time or have some type of rights here. The difference between them and those they bringing is the police already have some knowledge about the locals. Those coming into the territory is another story. Them bringing crooks to tackle crooks. Who policing the police?

There is no vetting to become police in Tola. It seems the criteria is to have a friend in a high position. I know one who used to work rite way in police uniform and i was shocked. If my memory serves me well i heard he was charged criminally in tortola.before joining the service. Was any background check done on him?

It’s concerning to see such a serious breach of trust within the police force. I hope justice is served and measures are put in place to prevent this from happening again.

it is amazing how others simple waltz into this territory and commit such serious crimes and he is not the first law enforcement official that violated the laws he swore to uphold and might even walk free like some of the others

when some of the others because of their complexion and nationality commits crimes as police nothing comes out of it just ask a commissioner of police

These transferred officers seem to be problems. They train in other countries yet when they get to the bvi they are quickly promoted and placed in plain clothes departments. They need to do better background checks and find out why they are running from their government jobs to come here before hiring them. Most of them are corrupt and have a bad reputation where they come from. Shame on the heads of the bvi police force.

The only solution and obvious sensible solution,is to discard, remove those who are the offenders. A quick glance and it is and has been evident, clear as day that the criminals and occupants of the prison are but from consistently, one and only one location in this universe. Specifically at least 99.9% are from the Caricom countries, updeislun and garrots as they are popularly referred. Drain the fetid swamp, previously BVI,of this easily replaceable element of our tiny society. The branch of Gov that is responsible for their disastrous presence are themselves criminals. Imposing these demonic impostors on these Vi while daily viewing the destructive effect,is a crime against humanity. They have home, land of Births at their convenience with a thousand times more resources than these BVI. Why must we be made to suffer this unfair and unwanted prolonged crime against our humanity.and decency. The skills for which they are hired are easily and readily replaceable where necessary.

The whole police force needs rechecked for integrity, character and background activities. The community will never respect the Police force of its not done. From top to bottom, we have a problem.

Doing a background check on those officers is a waste of time cause anyone with good character, go to church every Sunday will still be tempted by the power of money and drugs to enrich themselves. It's a crime yes to do bad n wrong doings but in these times ppl are doing anything just to pay bills and survive and some just want to live lavishly.

They only join the force for benefits. They are not in it because it was a childhood dream or anything. I once had a worker( non BVI lander) working for me. They told me they are considering quitting to join the force and began to list out all the benefits they get .
Two month later they quit and not to long after I saw them in uniform. They are not there to serve they are there for benefits. The police force in rotten from the top down. Police bill will not make policing any better. The force will only get worst internally. Cops, sorry pigs can be very spiteful . Be careful what you all are doing with this police bill . Mark my works. These police are not police of integrity . They are revengeful and Spiteful. They don’t have the mind and souls of a police . Their hearts are not in it!

Just look at the way they move. You can tell they a bunch of hoodlums from other islands giving a second chance by a weak vetting system.

But better them than me because I will not like to be a cop. Noting about being a cop is enticing for me and these horror stories just tells me I am not wrong in my feelings.

For that person to move from a job to policing in that short space of time .. something isn’t right!

Nonetheless, there are one or two good cops. Literally !

The BVI is no longer under the protective bubble that you were living under, the protective bubble burst. Y’all allow any and everyone to come in and do as they please Including some of you locals for the love of money, dirty kitty cat and dirty ping a longs.
