Police marine nabs 19 illegal immigrants along with VI boat captain

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Police Marine Officers last evening July 17, 2022, have nabbed some 19 illegal immigrants along with their boat captain after intercepting a suspicious vessel in VI waters.

A release today, July 18, 2022,  from the force said that during a rescue effort last evening, police attempted to intercept a suspicious vessel with a number of persons on board but the vessel sped off.

“Officers gave chase, and the captain ran the boat aground in the area of Manuel Reef where persons onboard tried to flee,” the release noted.

When on shore, officers of the Armed Response Team, Marine Unit, and Patrol captured and detained a total of 19 illegal immigrants including three persons who escaped and were later detained.

Police indicated that no injuries were reported and the immigrants were nationals of Venezuela, Cuba, Dominica Republic, and Guyana and that the immigration Department provided assistance.

The alleged captain, a BVI resident, was also arrested on suspicion of human smuggling.

Commissioner of Police Mark Collins commended that the quick and decisive actions of the officers likely saved lives.

    Detention center ha ha soon all will be out. Rat minding cheese in the detention hotel. I'm so sorry for them people trying to find a better life always ending up in bitterness. While we don't know their motives for their risk it is obvious something is not adding up. Take a look around some times they here next thing they in the USVI then back in BVI. Have some mercy on these people but if you know you are hiding them be prepared to face the laws of the land.

    Sorry for them treat them good until you can get them back to their home land which may be in turmoil. Probably that's why they are running. Just speculating here there could be other motives
