Police legislation need upgrading, says acting COP
He was at the time speaking to a group of Road Town business owners about the future goals for the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).
“A lot of the legislation in the Territory around law enforcement need to be modernised in terms of DNA, taking DNA prints, photographs etc,” he told the group. “And I will be working with the Attorney General’s Office on that.”
It is evident that forensics is lacking in the Virgin Islands since many crucial pieces of evidence in high profile and gun related cases are usually sent to the United States of America or the United Kingdom to be tested.
Virgin Islands News Online was informed by a Crown Counsel in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) that it takes weeks for the evidence to be returned.
In addition to that, a Drug Analyst is flown in about every six weeks to review any illegal substances that were unearthed by law enforcement officers.
