ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Commissioner of Police (CoP) Michael B. Matthews and Comptroller of Customs Wade N. Smith led the way for their charges by being first in line to take the first dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine at Police Headquarters in Road Town on February 18, 2021.

According to Commissioner Matthews, the vaccine ‘jab’ was quick, virtually painless and has provided for him a sense of protection and confidence moving forward.

“I happily took the vaccine this morning. We are on the frontline and just as we put on our protective vests and gear before dealing with potentially deadly situations, we must also readily put on our immunisation arsenal. It is that simple. The COVID outbreaks in the Force place several shifts out of commission. We were scrambling to maintain sufficient coverage during those days. While it is absolutely optional, I am happy there is an option for keeping continuity of service,” Mr Matthews stated in a press release on February 18, 2021.

More would be vaccinated if COVID deaths were higher- Matthews

Outside headquarters was a line of other officers from the law enforcement sector waiting to receive the vaccine.

“For the wider community, there is reluctance by many to take the vaccine. Truth is if the COVID deaths were higher here, we would see a lot more coming forward for vaccinations. Government worked tremendously to keep the community safe, but the price is we essentially are isolated from the experiences of the world. Those I found in the line this morning were family members of individuals overseas who either died or almost died from the virus,” Mr Matthews said.

The CoP emphasised that the Virgin Islands community should “make no mistake - this virus is not selective. In the absence of any alternatives for keeping us safe and restoring our economies, I am happy there is an option.”

Vaccinations will also be delivered today at Police Headquarters strictly for law enforcement officers.

Observation: Why aren't these Healthcare Workers administering the vaccine not wearing gloves?

It goes to show that you all fall for a set of bullshit in the media. Are you really going to sit behind a computer and judge MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS and how they carry out their duties? You all are so DUMB you don't realize that gloves carry move germs and bacteria than the bare hand. Surely you would know that medics sanitize regularly even before the COVID craze.

It has been proven to be more hygienic and safer for health care workers to wash hands and not wear gloves than to wear gloves while vaccinating someone.

do you wish to contribute to gloves for use with each customer? The customers do not have covid and also they have the various sanitization items nearby for use after each customer.

That was a stupid question to ask about contributing to gloves being changed after each use because if you were dealing with HIV-positive Individuals, you would be required to change the gloves after each patient. It would not matter how many or how little person you handle. The doctors are required to change their gloves after each patient so it should not be any different with vaccinating people for covid-19+

They sanitize their hands before each jab. They would have to do the same with gloves. Covid can live on gloves just as easily as on hands. So there is no point in gloves.

Universal precautions dictates that gloves be worn for all such procedures, changing gloves and sanitizing hands after each use.
