Pioneer JvD businesswoman Gertrude A. Callwood passes
She died this morning Sunday, August 18, 2024, at Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital in Road Town, on the main island of Tortola, after a brief illness.
She was 78 years of age, having been born on March 9, 1946. She is survived by five sons, including businessman Gregory A. Callwood of JvD, and Police Officer Glen J. D. Callwood Sr aka ‘Super Cop.’
The late Gertrude, an indigenous Virgin Islander, was one of the first businesswoman on JvD and was the owner of the famous Gertrude’s Beach Bar and Grill located in White Bay, where she also lived for most of her life.
A trailblazer
The deceased was a big power broker on JvD and remained an influencer before her illness. One could not be interested in district two politics without going through the late Ms Callwood and getting her views and guidance.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services, Labour and Trade Hon Lorna G. Smith OBE (AL), writing on her Facebook page today, described Ms Callwood as a “Trailblazer, phenomenal woman and a lady I was lucky to call my friend”. Hon Smith said “Miss Gertrude started the first bar at White Bay on a table, which over the years became the most popular bar on White Bay."
The Management and Staff of Virgin Islands News Online express our condolences to her immediate family and other loved ones.
